From start to finish, Prime Video‘s The Consultant is a wild, mind-boggling watch.

Created by Tony Basgallop and adapted from Bentley Little’s 2015 novel of the same name, the eight-episode dark comedic thriller follows employees of the app-based gaming company CompWare after its CEO is brutally murdered.

When a mysterious consultant, Regus Patoff (Christoph Waltz), arrives to save the company and wreak havoc on its workers, CompWare’s dynamic duo Craig (Nat Wolff) and Elaine (Brittany O’Grady) set out to uncover the truth about their boss’ death and Patoff’s suspicious presence.

After you binge-watch Season 1 of The Consultant, which premieres in full on February 24, your mind will likely be racing. Episode 8, “Hammer,” ends with several major realizations and curious cliffhanger that’s begging to be unpacked.

Wondering what the hell happened in the final minutes of The Consultant Season 1? Or if Prime Video has renewed The Consultant for Season 2? Read on for Decider’s ending explained, plus everything we know about the future of the series. But be mindful that massive spoilers lie ahead.

The Consultant Ending Explained: Is Regus Pattoff a Human or a Robot?

In Episode 8 of The Consultant, the mounting tension between Craig, Elaine, Patti (Aimee Carrero) and Patoff reaches its peak when Craig learns that Pattoff has Patti (who crucially is not employed at CompWare) working for him in the records room. While Elaine goes to talk some sense into a seemingly brainwashed Patti, Craig confronts Pattoff on the upper level of the office, where the floor is — wait for it — glass. Mirroring the game he designed, Craig takes a hammer and smashes the glass floor while a barefoot Patoff is standing on it. The consultant goes crashing to the ground floor, and the broken glass causes him to lose a big toe. Yikes.

Once Patti realizes she was under Patoff’s spell, she pulls the fire alarm and flees the scene with Craig and Elaine. Just when we think Patoff will be caught, we see a trail of bloody footprints in the office that suggest he made it out before the cops came.

We fast forward to police questioning Elaine about The Elephant Incident (where she paid someone $10,000 to steal an elephant). She claims she had nothing to do with it and tells them to reach out to the consultant who started working for CompWare. Meanwhile, Patti packs her bags and moves out, which leads us to believe that her and Craig’s engagement didn’t survive Patoff. Have no fear. Craig’s doing just fine. Why? Because he snagged Patoff’s severed big toe from the office that night, and upon boiling it and slicing it open he finds a solid gold toe bone.

Remember earlier in the season when jeweler Frank Florez (Juan Carlos Cantu) told Craig a bunch of doctors used to come into his shop, ask him to discreetly craft the 206 bones in the human body out of gold, and pay him in checks signed by Regus Patoff? Yeah, so…it looks like those all those solid gold bones Florez made comprise Patoff’s skeleton, which means he’s likely more robot than human. The revelation explains SO much, and though it’s weird as hell is it really too surprising? The man’s name is a condensed version of “Registered U.S. Patent Office” for goodness sake!

When Elaine heads back to work she sees her name on Patoff’s door and flowers and the key to the records room are waiting for her on his desk. That’s right, folks. She’s the boss of CompWare now!

Despite the big blowout between Craig and Patoff, the consultant dares return to the office one last time. He looks around the room at everyone working, sees Mrs Sang polishing the NSFW statue of her son at the top of the stairs, and turns to limp out the door.

Before the season ends, we check in with the middle school student who killed CompWare’s CEO and set off this chaotic chain of events. He takes out his phone, fires up Mr. Sang’s Jungle Odyssey, and tries his hand at the cursed Level 316 again. In the corner of his room, a TV shows a news report announcing that another CEO is dead. This time, the CEO worked for a company named Pterodactyl, which “strived to develop the first humanoid workforce.” 👀 Focus shifts back to Mr Sang’s, and the kid finally beats the previously impossible level. A “GAME OVER” screen flashes, and the end credits roll.

Will There Be A Season 2 of The Consultant On Prime Video?

As of premiere day, Prime Video has yet to renew or cancel The Consultant. But considering Patoff left CompWare and another CEO was found dead, there’s certainly room for the series to explore fresh storylines in the future. The anthology route would leave CompWare, Craig, Elaine, and Patti behind and show Patoff consulting for another company with a new cast. But there’s also a chance that we could check back in with Season 1 characters and carry over several storylines, including Elaine as the boss or Craig on a hunt for Patoff-related answers (and more gold). Decider reached out to The Consultant‘s reps to inquire about a potential Season 2, and we’ll update this piece if we hear back.

Season 1 of The Consultant Is currently streaming on Prime Video.
