During his monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live on last night (Feb. 15), late night host Jimmy Kimmel took to roasting his usual targets, from Donald Trump to Donald Trump Jr., but in the midst of a segment about newly-elected New York Congressman George Santos, Kimmel told one joke that caught the audience off guard and elicited groans instead of laughter.

Kimmel was discussing one of the many scandals Santos has been involved with, this one pertaining to accusations that he stole Golden Retriever puppies from an Amish dog breeder in Pennsylvania in 2017. Santos has been accused of writing bad checks to the breeder for more than $15,000, all of which bounced.

Kimmel first joked, “Stealing puppies from the Amish? This could be the crime of the century. The 18th century.”

But as Kimmel continued, he added, “There you go, George Santos is now No. 2 on the Amish enemy list ― just below electricity. And the big question is, what did he do with the puppies? I mean, is this what his sweater vests are made out of?”

A photo of Santos wearing a fuzzy vest then appeared onscreen, eliciting a groan from the entire audience, who clearly didn’t want to think about these poor dogs dying at the hands of Santos, only to be turned into a bro vest.

“Don’t worry, it’s just a joke, guys,” he said, realizing that dead puppy fur is the one unifying subject that people across every spectrum will not tolerate.

Meanwhile, George Santos is probably off somewhere trying to authenticate a 23and Me test that links him to Cruella De Vil because maybe Kimmel is on to something.

Jimmy Kimmel Live airs weeknights at 11:35/10:35c on ABC. Watch Kimmel’s monologue in the video above.
