Candace Cameron Bure Blasts “Cancel Culture” After Homophobia Controversy

Candace Cameron Bure says her past comments have made her a victim of “cancel culture.” The Fuller House actress, who came under fire late last year for homophobic remarks to The Wall Street Journal, is speaking up now to defend her stance and her faith.

Bure appeared on Wednesday’s episode of the Unapologetic With Julia Jeffress Sadler podcast, where she said Christians like herself are persecuted for speaking their beliefs.

“And I know there’s all the places in the world, all different countries, where people get severely persecuted for their faith. I feel like we’ve had this cushion here in North America, where, you know, someone yells at us or someone says a mean, negative thing and our feelings get so hurt over it, and that isn’t nearly the persecution that a lot of other people go through for being a Christian in other countries,” Bure said.

She continued, “Nevertheless, cancel culture is real, and it’s difficult, and it’s hard, but listen, I just want to encourage you that you are not the only one and there are lots of us,” adding, “It’s hard, no matter what. Especially when you are a compassionate person and you have a heart for people.

“But it’s important that we speak truth in love, ’cause, listen, nobody’s gonna change, nobody’s gonna listen to you when it comes out angry, when it comes out in a harsh way, but it’s important that we don’t back down,” she said.

Her comments come after a wave of backlash she faced in November for proclaiming that the Great American Family network would not feature any same-sex couples in their films. At the time, Bure was promoting her switch from Hallmark to Great American Family, the more conservative of the two networks, and hyping up her Christmas movie A Christmas…Present.

The actress said that Great American Family would “keep traditional marriage at the core” of their programming, a statement that ushered in immediate backlash accusations of homophobia.

Bure later released a statement defending herself, writing, in part,  It absolutely breaks my heart that anyone would ever think I intentionally would want to offend and hurt anyone,” before adding, “We need Christmas more than ever” due to the “toxic climate in our culture.”
