New year, new movies. It’s officially 2023, and if there’s one thing the new year is certain to bring, it’s a boatload of new movies you can stream at home.

While movies are slowly moving back to theaters as we enter the fourth year of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are still plenty of 2023 streaming original movies that you can look forward to watching from the comfort of your own home. Unsurprisingly, Netflix is leading the charge with next year’s most-anticipated streaming movies, including a new David Fincher drama, The Killer; a Leonard Bernstein biopic, Maestro; and the latest sci-fi epic from Zack Snyder, Rebel Moon.

But Apple—which is still the only streamer to ever take home the Oscar for Best Picture—is promising a strong year too, including the highly-anticipated Martin Scorsese picture, Killers of the Flower Moon, and a new Julianne Moore drama, Sharper.

If your 2023 New Year’s resolution is to watch more movies, then Decider here is here to help. Here’s a look at 23 of the most anticipated streaming original movies coming out in 2023, including release dates for the 2023 streaming movies, when available.

'The Pale Blue Eye'

Release Date: January 6
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Christian Bale, Harry Melling, Gillian Anderson
Why We’re Hyped: If you loved Glass Onion and are craving more detective stories, Netflix has you covered with this adaptation of Louis Bayard’s 2003 novel about a veteran detective who investigates a series of military murders with a young Edgar Allen Poe. Christian Bale rarely gives a bad performance, and with a fascinating premise, this one sounds like it will be worth a watch.

'The Drop'

The Drop

Release Date: January 13
Streaming Service: Hulu
Cast: Anna Konkle, Jermaine Fowler, Aparna Nancherla, Jillian Bell
Why We’re Hyped: Hulu has been killing the original comedy game as of late, and its upcoming dark ensemble comedy, The Drop, is no exception. Pen15′s Anna Konkle stars as a flighty woman who accidentally drops her best friend’s infant baby. Don’t worry, the baby is fine. But the group of charming, care-free millennial friends might not be. You don’t want to miss this one.

'Teen Wolf: The Movie'

TEEN WOLF: THE MOVIE
Photo: MTV ENTERTAINMENT

Release Date: January 26
Streaming Service: Paramount+
Cast: Tyler Posey, Crystal Reed, Tyler Hoechlin, Holland Roden, Colton Haynes
Why We’re Hyped: Teen Wolf is going to be a movie… again! The late 2000s MTV show, which was based on the 1985 Michael J. Fox film, is bringing back the cast of this supernatural teen sensation in a new movie written by Jeff Davis. Well, most of the cast. Fan-favorite Dylan O’Brien will not be reprising his role as Stiles, breaking the hearts of Sterek shippers everywhere. Look, I never finished this show, but I admit, even I’m curious about this one.

'You People'

Release Date: January 27
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Eddie Murphy, Jonah Hill, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lauren London
Why We’re Hyped: “Anticipated” might be the wrong word for this upcoming buddy comedy from black-ish creator Kenya Barris, who co-wrote the script with Jonah Hill. The trailer was roasted on Twitter last month, but we can’t help but be curious about the team-up of Barris and Hill. Plus, it’s always nice to see Eddie Murphy back in action. That man can make even the most un-funny comedies enjoyable, so we’ll give this a chance.

'Shotgun Wedding'

Shotgun Wedding

Release Date: January 27
Streaming Service: Amazon Prime Video
Cast: Jennifer Lopez, Josh Duhamel, Sônia Braga, Jennifer Coolidge, Lenny Kravitz, and Cheech Marin
Why We’re Hyped: If you watched the trailer for this upcoming romantic comedy—which featured perhaps the most unexpected trailer plot twist of the year—then you know Shotgun Wedding has all the makings of a laugh-out-loud, mid-budget action comedy. Who doesn’t love those? After the success of The Lost City, I’m more than ready for this one. Plus, JLo and Josh Duhamel? That’s inspired.

'Pamela, a love story'

Release Date: January 31
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Pamela Anderson
Why We’re Hyped: Pamela Anderson is telling her side of the story in this documentary about her, directed by her. While self-directed celebrity documentaries tend to be inevitably biased, if anyone deserves to tell her own story, it’s Anderson. This film promises to include Anderson’s reaction to Hulu’s controversial Pam & Tommy series, which depicted Anderson’s infamous sex tape with Tommy Lee. If we’re going to watch dramatizations of real-life people’s scandals, we should at least let them speak their piece.

Release Date: February 10
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Reese Witherspoon, Ashton Kutcher
Why We’re Hyped: Writer/director Aline Brosh McKenna—the brilliant mind behind The Devil Wears Prada, 27 Dresses, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend—is blessing us with a classic rom-com next year, and we couldn’t be more grateful. National treasure Reese Witherspoon and early 2000s heartthrob Ashton Kutcher play lifelong BFFs who swap houses for a week in what sounds like a delicious friends-to-lovers romance.

Photo: Apple TV+

Release Date: February 17 (in theaters February 10)
Streaming Service: Apple TV+
Cast: Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan, Justice Smith, John Lithgow
Why We’re Hyped: If you loved the Andor finale, you’ll want to keep an eye out for director Benjamin Caron’s debut feature, Sharper, an A24 and Apple joint release. Oscar-winner Julianne Moore leads the cast in this moody thriller about “the secrets of New York City, from the penthouses of Fifth Avenue to the shadowy corners of Queens. “

Photo: John Wilson/Netflix

Release Date: March 2023
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Idris Elba, Cynthia Erivo
Why We’re Hyped: Huge news for fans of the 2010s British crime series Luther: They’re making a Luther movie! Idris Elba is returning to the role that put him on the map. Written by series creator Neil Cross, this continuation of the story finds the brilliant, disgraced detective in jail while the serial killer he failed to capture terrorizes London. But Luther is prepared to break out by any means necessary.

'The Mother'

Release Date: May 2023
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Jennifer Lopez, Joseph Fiennes, Omari Hardwick, and Gael García Bernal
Why We’re Hyped: It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that putting JLo in a deadly action thriller is pretty much all you need to do to make a hit film. In The Mother, Lopez stars as an assassin who comes out of hiding in order to protect the daughter she left behind. Between this and her action-comedy, 2023 is primed to be yet another winning year for JLo. When isn’t it?

'We Have a Ghost'

Photo: Netflix

Release Date: Spring 2023
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: David Harbor, Anthony Mackie, Tig Notaro, Jennifer Coolidge
Why We’re Hyped: Christopher Landon—aka the dude who brought you Happy Death Day and Freaky—has adapted a Vice short story about a family who discovers ghosts in their house and promptly decides to use that content to become social media stars. With a killer (pun intended) cast, a solid premise, and a promising track record from Landon, this will definitely be a big one for horror fans next year.

'Murder Mystery 2'

Photo: Netflix

Release Date: Spring 2023
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston
Why We’re Hyped: It’s the sequel that no one asked for, but considering how well the first Murder Mystery film did for the streamer, it’s no surprise that Netflix ordered a second. And considering the sequel was filmed in Hawaii and Paris, it’s no surprise that Adam Sandler said yes to making another. I’m very happy for Sandler and his Hawaii/Paris vacations.

'Extraction 2'

EXTRACTION NETFLIX REVIEW
Photo: Jasin Boland/NETFLIX

Release Date: June 2023
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Chris Hemsworth
Why We’re Hyped: After Netflix released a teaser for Extraction 2 in late 2021, we all thought we’d see the sequel in 2022. But, alas, that sequel never came. Hopefully, we’ll get Tyler Rake back in Extraction 2 this yar. If this sequel does as well as the first film for Netflix, we might just have a Netflix action franchise on our hands.

'Killers of the Flower Moon'

Killers of the Flower Moon
Photo: Courtesy of Apple

Release Date: 2023 TBA
Streaming Service: Apple TV+
Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jesse Plemons, Lily Gladstone, and Robert De Niro
Why We’re Hyped: We certainly hope to see Martin Scorsese’s next film in 2023. Killers of the Flower Moon was supposed to hit Apple TV+ this year but was bumped to 2023 over the summer. You know Scorsese and his editing process! Based on a 2017 nonfiction book by David Grann, it tells the true story of an FBI investigation into the mysterious killings of members of the American Indian Osage tribe in the 1920s. It’s the sixth collaboration between Scorsese and DiCaprio, and the tenth between Scorsese and De Niro—but we’re most excited to see actor Lily Gladstone (First Cow, Walking Out) in a major role.

'Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget'

Photo: Everett Collection

Release Date: June 2023
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast:  Zachary Levi, Bella Ramsey, Thandiwe Newton, Romesh Ranganathan and Daniel Mays
Why We’re Hyped: Can you believe they are making a sequel to Robert Pattinson’s favorite chick flick, after all these years? Still one of the most successful stop-motion films of all time, Chicken Run is back, baby. Luckily, Mel Gibson is not, and will instead be replaced by Zachary Levi as the new voice Rocky. Thandiwe Newton is the new voice of Ginger, and Bella Ramsey will voice Rocky and Ginger’s new hatchling, Molly. It’s a whole chicken family.

'Havoc'

ForestWhitaker-TomHardy

Release Date: 2023 TBA
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Tom Hardy, Forest Whitaker, Timothy Olyphant
Why We’re Hyped: We though we’d see Havoc on Netflix this year, given that filming wrapped in 2021, but Netflix is making us wait. Who wouldn’t be excited for an action thriller with Tom Hardy? In Havoc, written and directed by Gareth Evans, Hardy will star as a detective tasked with unraveling his city’s world of underground crime, in order to rescue a politician’s estranged son. In other words, Tom Hardy is going to rough up a lot of bad guys. Can’t wait!

'Peter Pan & Wendy'

Photo: Disney+

Release Date: 2023 TBA
Streaming Service: Disney+
Cast: Alexander Molony, Yara Shahidi, Jim Gaffigan, Alan Tudyk, Molly Parker and Jude Law
Why We’re Hyped: The live-action Peter Pan film has been a longtime coming from Disney. Audiences will finally get to see the film next year, but it won’t be on the big screen—Disney relegated the release to Disney+ back in December 2020. Newcomer Alexander Molony will make his feature film debut as the boy who never grows up in this retelling of the classic children’s story. It’s sure to be a nostalgia fest for millennials.

'Rustin'

2nd Annual Academy Museum Gala - Arrivals
Photo: FilmMagic

Release Date: 2023 TBA
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Colman Domingo, Chris Rock, Glynn Turman, Audra McDonald, Jeffrey Wright
Why We’re Hyped: Tony-winning theater director George C. Wolfe is giving Hollywood a try with this upcoming biopic about gay civil rights activist Bayard Rustin. With the great Colman Domingo leading the cast as Rustin, and with the backing of Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company Higher Ground, we definitely have high hopes for this one.

'The Killer'

Release Date: 2023 TBA
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Michael Fassbender, Tilda Swinton
Why We’re Hyped: If you’re of the opinion that Mank stank, you might not be thrilled to hear that David Fincher is back again with another Netflix drama next year. The Killer is based on the French graphic novel series of the same name by Alexis Nolent, and stars Michael Fassbender as an expert assassin who is losing his touch. But perhaps most exciting is the fact that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross will be doing the soundtrack, continuing one of the greatest composer/director partnerships of modern cinema history.

'Maestro'

Bradley Cooper

Release Date: 2023 TBA
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Bradley Cooper, Carey Mulligan, Jeremy Strong, Matt Bomer, Maya Hawke, and Sarah Silverman
Why We’re Hyped: Bradley Cooper proved he could direct with A Star Is Born, and now he’s taking on the directing (and acting) challenge of portraying the life of composer Leonard Bernstein in this upcoming biopic for Netflix. After years of rocking out to West Side Story, I, for one, can’t wait to watch the story of this larger-than-life musician. Plus, what a cast.

'Pain Hustlers'

Photo: Getty Images

Release Date: 2023 TBA
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, Andy García, Catherine O’Hara, Jay Duplass, Brian d’Arcy James
Why We’re Hyped: Harry Potter alum David Yates is delving in the the world of drugs and conspiracy in this based-on-a-true-story film adapted from Evan Hughes’ New York Times Magazine article of the same name. Emily Blunt stars as a high school dropout working a pharmacy job, which leads to criminal conspiracy. Who better to take on Big Pharma than Captain America himself?

'Rebel Moon'

Zack Snyder

Release Date: 2023 TBA
Streaming Service: Netflix
Cast: Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Ray Fisher, Djimon Hounsou, Jena Malone, Corey Stoll, Ed Skrein, Cleopatra Coleman, Fra Fee, Cary Elwes, and Anthony Hopkins
Why We’re Hyped: Zack Snyder doesn’t care whether you like his movies or not, because he just keeps making more of them. His next Netflix sci-fi epic, which he has described as a “rejected Star Wars pitch” promises to be just as big, wild, and excruciatingly long as his recent projects, Justice League and Army of the Dead. But hey, we know some of you are into that. And you better believe Snyder already has the sequel, Rebel Moon Part 2, on deck—it was shot back-to-back with the first film earlier this year.

Untitled Sandra Oh, Awkwafina Comedy

sandra-oh-awkwafina
Photo: Getty Images

Release Date: 2023 TBA
Streaming Service: Hulu
Cast: Sandra Oh, Awkwafina, Jason Schwartzman, Holland Taylor, Tony Hale, and Will Ferrell
Why We’re Hyped: This upcoming comedy from 20th Century may not yet have a title, but it does have a top-notch cast. Sandra Oh and Awkwafina star as two very different sisters who are forced to work together to help track down a kidnapped dog. It sounds like a hilariously absurd road trip comedy. Plus, in this house, we always say “Stream It” to Sandra Oh.
