‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’ Falls Short of Netflix’s Top 5 Movie Debuts

It looks like a lot of people spent their holiday weekend with Detective Benoit Blanc and the rest of the Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery gang, as the film has officially become Netflix’s sixth biggest movie debut. While the Rian Johnson film did not make it in the Top 5, it still raked in 82.1 million hours watched within its first three days on the streaming platform.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Glass Onion, which came to Netflix on Dec. 23 after a brief stint in theaters back in November, trails behind the Sandra Bullock-led drama The Unforgivable (85.96 million hours), which is currently in fifth place, and the Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans action movie The Gray Man (88.55), which is in fourth.

Meanwhile, Red Notice (148.72 million hours), Don’t Look Up (111.03 million hours) and The Adam Project (92.43) are leading the charts in first, second and third place, respectively.

Glass Onion, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 whodunit movie Knives Outfinds Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) on a private Greek island, where he attempts to solve yet another murder case amongst a new group of wild suspects. While it’s not the first Netflix film to have a limited theatrical release, it is the only one to be released from all three major chains — AMC Theaters, Cinemark Theatres and Regal Cinemas.

Johnson, who wrote and directed Glass Onion as well as its predecessor, revealed that he would have wanted to see the movie in theaters for longer than the one week run it received back in November.

“I’d love it to be [in theaters] longer; I’d love it to be in more theaters,” he said in an interview with The Atlantic. “But also, I appreciate that Netflix has done this, because this was a huge effort on their part, and the theater chains, to reach across the aisle and make this happen.”

However, he added that he hopes the movie does “really well so we can demonstrate” that theatrical and streaming releases can “compliment each other.”

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is currently streaming on Netflix.
