Netflix’s Upcoming Rom-Com ‘You People’ Branded Unfunny by Twitter, but at Least Eddie Murphy Looks Good

Netflix dropped a teaser clip for their upcoming romantic-comedy You People, and Twitter users are letting it be known that they are not impressed.

While the upcoming flick boasts an enviable cast of Eddie Murphy, Jonah Hill, #WCW veteran Nia Long, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Lauren London, and comes from famous director Kenya Barris (who co-wrote the script with Hill), all that star power wasn’t enough .

You People follows an interracial couple and their families as they clash over their different backgrounds. Sharing the trailer on Twitter, Netflix teased, “Opposites may attract but some families don’t.”

The 1-minute video, which has been viewed over 2.4 million times, shows Hill’s character asking his girlfriend’s parents (played by Murphy and Long) for permission to propose to their daughter. During their conversation, Hill is grilled about his intentions — he’s asked, “Do you hang out in the hood all the time or do you just come up here for our food and women?” — and he offers his off-beat commentary on how “awesome” mixed-race babies are, citing Mariah Carey, Derek Jeter and “the GOAT” Malcolm X as examples.

Needless to say, the short clip didn’t bode well for the online community. Many have called out the movie for its outdated jokes and nitpicked a few crucial details, like Long not looking old enough to portray Lauren London’s mother (there is only a 14-year age difference between the actors) and Barris’ one-beat focus on mixed-race families (his previous works include Mixed-ish and the Cheaper By the Dozen reboot, which imagined the family as kin of Zach Braff and Gabrielle Union).

One Twitter user wrote, “I’m sure you could grab a better scene for a tease than this. Recycled ass Black/White dynamics from the 1990s.”

Another said, “I look forward to Kenya Barris’ first foray into science fiction where he explores the reality-bending dimension where Jonah Hill would be able to pull Lauren London.”

However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom. The clip, specifically Murphy’s performance, seems to have piqued some interest. One tweeted, “I don’t think I’ve seen Eddie Murphy in this kinda role.”

Another agreed, writing, “This feels like such a different role for Eddie Murphy but somehow he still knows how to make it hilarious while being the straightman in the scene.”

Others have been raving about Murphy and Long’s ageless looks, saying, “Nia & Eddie look great…that’s all I have.” One helpful commentator suggested a way for Netflix to spin another profit off of this movie, tweeting, “To be honest I’m more interested in a documentary of Kenya Barris and Jonah Hill writing this movie.”

Now that’s something I’d watch!

Given that Netflix has only released a teaser clip, the movie might have a few surprises in store, but as of now, it’s a resounding thumbs-down from Twitter.

You People is set to premiere on Netflix in 2023.
