Horror Maestro Mike Flanagan Ditches Long-Time Home Netflix for Amazon Studios

Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy are packing up their bags at Netflix. The duo behind series like The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manner, Midnight Mass, and, most recently, The Midnight Club are leaving the streamer for Amazon Studios, where they recently signed a new deal.

Under the new exclusive, multi-year agreement, the filmmaking pair will create new television projects for the streamer, under their Intrepid Pictures label, according to Deadline. In a shared statement from Flanagan and Macy, the pair said they’ve “long admired” Amazon Studios.

“Their commitment to engaging in groundbreaking series and content aligns with the ethos of what we have built at Intrepid. We are looking forward to working with the entire Amazon team as we bring our brand of genre productions to the service and audiences around the globe,” the said, per Deadline.

Vernon Sanders, Head of Global Television at Amazon Studies, celebrated the deal, saying the two are “remarkable at telling immersive, suspenseful stories that masterfully keep audiences engaged from start to finish.”

Sanders added, “We are excited to welcome them to Amazon Studios and are looking forward to our global customers experiencing their genre-bending creativity.”

Flanagan and Macy’s television deal with Netflix was announced in 2019, which Netflix said made “official their prolific seven-year partnership,” in a press release.

Despite their Amazon deal, the two still have a couple of upcoming projects on their slate at Netflix, with one, The Fall of the House of Usher, now in post-production. The limited series is based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe and is set to premiere in 2023.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the show will star Flanagan and Macy’s frequent collaborators, Zach Gilford, Rahul Kohli and Samantha Sloyan, along with Mark Hamill, Bruce Greenwood and Carla Gugino.

The second is an adaptation of Christopher Pike’s (The Midnight Club author) The Season of Passage which was announced in April 2021 and has been acquired by Universal, Deadline reports.
