Is ‘The Son’ Streaming on HBO Max or Netflix?

What better way to recover from a hearty Thanksgiving feast than to watch two of our favorites, Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern? The screen icons star alongside each other in The Son, Florian Zeller’s latest drama.

The new film follows a 17-year-old boy who moves in with his father (Jackman) and his father’s new partner, Beth (Vanessa Kirby), just a couple of years after his parents’ split. The all-star cast is rounded out by William Hope and Anthony Hopkins.

The Son is coming to select theaters the day after Turkey Day, and we have everything you need to know about how, when and where you can watch it.

WHERE TO WATCH THE SON:

As of now, the only way to watch The Son is to head out to a movie theater in Los Angeles or New York City, where the film is debuting on Friday, Nov. 25. Otherwise, you’ll just have to wait for the nationwide release on Jan. 20, 2023. You can find a local showing on Fandango.

WHEN WILL THE SON BE ON NETFLIX?

Netflix subscribers are in luck. Thanks to a deal Netflix inked with Sony Pictures that gives the streamer U.S. rights to all the company’s theatrical films starting in 2022, you will be able to watch The Son right from your account.

While a streaming release date has not yet been announced, we can make an estimate based on another recent Sony film. Where the Crawdads Sing was released in theaters on July 15, 2022, before it came to Netflix on Nov. 12. If The Son follows the same pattern, we could be watching from the comfort of our homes by late May 2023 — about four months after it debuts in theaters nationwide.

WILL THE SON BE ON HBO MAX?

No, The Son will not be on HBO Max because it is not a Warner Bros. movie. Last year, the company released its films in theaters and on the streamer the same day. Now, they have a 45-day window between theatrical and streaming releases.
