Woman Crush Wednesday: Get to Know ‘Blockbuster’ Actress Madeleine Arthur

Happy November, everyone! You don’t have to wait until Thanksgiving to feast on terrific titles from your favorite streaming services. You also won’t have to wait to celebrate Woman Crush Wednesday, a weekly sort of holiday where we share our gratitude and admiration for the amazing actresses delivering top-notch performances in the latest movies and shows streaming now. To kick off the new month, we’re celebrating a laudable lady who has already accomplished a ton on screens big and small at the age of just 25, and who is poised to deliver many more compelling and depth-filled performances for years to come. So, without further ado, give it up for your WCW, the magnificent Madeleine Arthur!

WHO’S THAT GAL: Madeleine Arthur

WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: Arthur plays Hannah Hadman in upcoming Netflix Original title Blockbuster, which premiered on the platform this Thursday, on November 3. The workplace comedy series follows Timmy Yoon (Randall Park), the manager of America’s last standing Blockbuster Video, who struggles to adapt to our current high-tech, fast-paced reality. When he realizes that his Blockbuster is the last one left in the country, Timmy and his employees fight to stay relevant in a world where VHS tapes and DVDs grow increasingly obsolete.

Yet even in the face of the massive task of preserving a brand and legacy that the rest of the world has deemed archaic and obsolete, Timmy is determined to remain undaunted as he and his Blockbuster crew attempt to bond with their local community using the one thing most big corporations can’t provide: genuine, heartfelt human connection. See Arthur, Park, Melissa Fumero, Tyler Alvarez, Olga Merediz, J. B. Smoove, and the rest of the terrific cast kill it in Blockbuster as it drops this week, only on Netflix.

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: Arthur’s professional onscreen career began in 2011 when she played Meg in an episode of anthology horror-fantasy series R.L. Stine’s the Haunting Hour. Over the next few years, she began amassing appearances in shows like The Killing, Spooksville, The Tomorrow People, and Supernatural, as well as in films like 2014 biographical crime-drama Big Eyes, 2014 horror-thriller Grace: The Possession, and 2015 short comedy-drama film The Wolf Who Came to Dinner. Arthur began taking her career to the next level in 2016 with the recurring role of Young Willa Warren in ABC thriller series The Family. From there, she earned guest or small recurring roles in well-known shows like Legends of Tomorrow, The X-Files, and The Magicians, all before earning the role for which she is most recognized, as Lara Jean’s (Lana Condor) best friend Christine in 2018 Netflix Original teen romantic-comedy film To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.

Since then, Arthur has been well on her way to becoming a household name with her hard work and incredible performances in shows like Snowpiercer, Chad, Guilty Party, and Devil in Ohio, and in films like 2019 arthouse period piece Enclosure, 2019 sci-fi horror Color Out of Space and To All the Boys2020 and 2021 sequels. Clearly, Arthur is an immense talent who has already achieved so much in the first decade of her career, and we can’t wait to see all that she pursues and accomplishes in the decades to come.

WHERE YOU’LL SEE HER AGAIN: You can look forward to seeing Arthur star as Laura in the currently in pre-production drama film Tell Me Why I Don’t Like Mondays, which shares a fictional account of Laura, a self-destructive and remote teenager living a drug fueled, dead-end, latch-key existence in a Southern Californian suburb, as told through her own diary. For even more from the actress in the meantime, be sure to follow her on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook so that you never miss a moment from your wonderful WCW!
