The Midnight Club

The Midnight Club is Mike Flanagan’s latest series to drop on Netflix – and just in time for the spooky season. Following the success of The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass, this new series hit the streamer on October 7, 2022, and features many of Flanagan’s regulars, like Samantha Sloyan, Rahul Kohli, and Henry Thomas.

Based on the 1994 novel of the same name by Christopher Pike, and several of his other works, the horror thriller follows a group of eight young adults in hospice care as they gather together, every night, at midnight to exchange scary stories. The 10-episode series intertwines a record-breaking number of jump scares (seriously) and heartfelt personal stories from the perspectives of the terminally ill to tell a horrific story that will scare the pants off of everyone, whether their fears are derived from existentialism or paranormal creatures.

The Midnight Club isn’t afraid to mix genres as it offers straight-up drama and young love, along with its big spooks. Sounds like another really popular Netflix series, huh? Continue reading for seven thrilling shows you need to watch next (minus the three Flanagan shows listed above because that’d be too easy.)

I’m sure we’ve all seen Stranger Things by now, but if you haven’t, this has to be next on your list. This mega-hit series follows a group of young teens in the 1980s as they discover an alternate universe filled with deadly creatures, after one of their friends goes missing. Not only does it channel similar high-stakes horror and a cute lil romances, but if The Midnight Club’s scenes between Ilonka and Tim left you teary-eyed, just wait until you meet Eleven and Hopper.

'Servant'

For our final recommendation, let’s tap into the psychological horror of The Midnight Club. In Flanagan’s series, the protagonist repeatedly saw paranormal creatures around the hospice center – which, at one point, caused her to faint. Well, in M. Night Shyamalan‘s Servant, a wealthy couple uses a realistic doll to grief over the death of their son, but it’s not as simple as that. It turns out that the doll is possessed by a supernatural spirit which leads to a lot of strange (and scary) happenings.
