Sam Smith and Kelly Clarkson broke the internet with a special duet of “Breakaway” on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

The pop singer uses her “Kellyoke” segment to sing covers of popular songs from across the genres – and she’s typically solo. But, on October 11, Clarkson welcomed Smith to the stage to join her and the two harmonized on a rendition of her critically acclaimed single, “Breakaway”.

Fans were immediately obsessed – and didn’t even demand Clarkson participate in duets more often – they were just relishing in the epic collaboration. One Twitter user wrote, “I’m feeling vulnerable so I would like to admit the following: I just cried watching Kelly Clarkson and Sam Smith duet to Breakaway.”

Another said, “Sam Smith x Kelly Clarkson is the collaboration I never new [sic] I needed.”

“Has anyone else seen Kelly Clarkson and Sam Smith singing Breakaway together?!!! Chills,” tweeted a third.

Smith, who uses they/them pronouns, shared a heartfelt message to the TV host on his Instagram stories. They wrote, “Singing with you @kellyclarkson was something that I will never get over. When I was a troubled and confused teenager I would sit in my room listening to your album and dream of what life could be like.”

They continued, “Your voice and your songs healed me in so many ways. So to sing Breakaway with you was v [very] emotional for me.” Smith also thanked Clarkson for her “kindness and for sharing [her] superpowers with us all.”

Clarkson’s hit single is famously featured on the soundtrack for The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement and is the title track of her 2004 pop album, which also includes the songs, “Since U Been Gone”, “Behind These Hazel Eyes”, and “Walk Away”. The album won Clarkson two awards at the 48th Grammy Awards, with one being Best Pop Vocal Album. The album was followed with My December and All I’ve Ever Wanted.

Recently, Clarkson has been dominating her television appearances as she has been judging The Voice since 2018, her namesake daytime talk show since 2019, and American Song Contest since 2022. Clarkson released an EP earlier this year with six standout “Kellyoke” covers, including “Happier Than Ever” (originally by Billie Eilish) and Fake Plastic Trees (originally by Radiohead).

Now, chop chop, let’s get “Breakaway” on Spotify.
