7 Shows Like ‘Derry Girls’

The Derry Girls have taken their last bow on our screens with the third — and final — series of the comedy series hitting Netflix. The show followed four girls from Northern Ireland, and an English prick, as they came-of-age in the peak of political unrest in the 1990s. The series was equal parts uplifting and laugh-out-loud funny, as it brought to light the average lives of teenagers during a tense and dangerous period of time in the U.K.

While there will be no more episodes of Derry Girls, there are plenty other series with similar themes and characters that can be binged as as replacement. Once you’ve finished crying to “Dreams” by the Cranberries, these just as comforting and witty shows are sure to fill the Derry-sized hole in your heart. (Sorry, Londonderry.)

Created by comedians Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, Broad City follows two besties, also named Abbi and Ilana, as they galavant around New York getting themselves involved in some pretty eccentric shenanigans. This raunchy comedy has amazingly tasteful humor, and features cameos from many comedians and celebrities, like Amy Poehler and Shania Twain. Join the Broads as they navigate relationships, sexuality, and the trials and tribulations of being in your 20s. And spoiler alert, also exactly like Derry Girls, Broad City includes a cameo from a member of the Clinton family.

If you haven’t yet streamed Chewing Gum, this is your sign. Do it, now. Created and written by Michaela Coel, the series follows young adult Tracey. Living with her family in an East London flat, Tracey struggles to enter into womanhood dealing with her racy desires, while conforming to her mother’s religious rules. While Chewing Gum is absolutely hilarious, it has all the ingredients that make a comfort show: English accented banter and family-centered touching moments. You may even spy an actor or two from Bridgerton and House of Dragon.

'The Great'

Watch Elle Fanning tackle this “occasionally true story” as Catherine the Great: Empress of Russia. The Hulu original series follows Catherine as she first arrives in Russia to marry the unhinged Emperor Peter the III (played by powerhouse Nicholas Hoult), navigating their enemies to lovers relationship, to eventually ascending the throne herself. This comedy/drama has all the components Derry Girls had that we loved: clumsy characters, outlandish problems, and a little history sprinkled in between.

Adapted from Anne of Green Gables, this series follows teenaged orphan Anne who accidentally winds up on the doorstep of elderly siblings Matthew and Marilla. Free-spirited Anne learns to navigate her new life in Avonlea having new family, frienships, and love interests. Although it lacks the humor we love in Derry Girls, Anne With an E gives endearing performances bound to warm your heart in the same way. And, who doesn’t love a period piece?

My Mad Fat Diary is a British comedy/ drama about the life of an overweight teen, Rae. Having struggled with her mental health and body image, Rae tries to adjust back to her life with her friends and find love along the way. While much darker of a show, My Mad Fat Diary also does a great job depicting how teenagers live the life at hand while dealing with the trauma circulating around them. Killing Eve queen Jodie Comer also stars as Rae’s best friend.
