Jennifer Lopez’s ‘Shotgun Wedding’ Trailer Hides The Most Insane Movie Twist of The Year

Well, the rom-com has been officially resuscitated. The very first trailer for Shotgun Wedding has dropped, and if the film is even a sliver as crazy as the 3-minute preview we just watched, we’re all in for a truly wild ride.

The upcoming action/romance/comedy/thriller stars Jennifer Lopez as Darcy, a bride-to-be who is preparing for her dream island wedding to Tom (Josh Duhamel). The trailer begins like any other dull romance movie, with the couple getting steamy before their big day only to have Tom’s mom (Jennifer Coolidge) walk in and interrupt them at just the wrong time.

Yes, Coolidge is 61 and Duhamel is 49, but apparently we’re supposed to put that questionably close age gap aside and just buy into the fantasy of the trailer.

Anyway, it only gets more ridiculous going forward, as Lenny Kravitz arrives at the pre-wedding celebration and is revealed to be Darcy’s ex. Kravitz, appearing in his classic shtick, is described by one guest as looking “like he’s leading a porn safari.” ???

About 45 seconds in, we get the first few notes of “I’ll Be” by Edwin McCain, the 1997 power ballad that soundtracks the rest of the trailer, which culminates in a group sing-a-long on a beach. Good luck getting it out of your head.

But before we get treated to that cast-wide performance, the mood of the trailer shifts and the real plot emerges. Just as Darcy says, “Something doesn’t feel right,” a crew of unwelcome guests hijacks her wedding, running down the idyllic beach aisle while shooting machine guns up in the air.

Of course, no explanation is given for who these masked menaces really are, aside from Tom’s sparse details: “There are pirates outside, and they took everybody hostage.” How did they get here? What do they want? These burning questions are not addressed, but we do see Lopez and Duhamel scream their way across a zip-line through the jungle while being shot at by one of their captors.

Lopez then drops a grenade she wrestled from a pirate right onto his comrades — who are unlucky enough to be standing below — dramatically sending them up in flames.

And of course, Coolidge returns at the end of the trailer to grab a machine gun and proclaim, “nobody fucks with my family,” while firing off a couple of rounds. Chef’s kiss!
