‘The Crown’ Will Stop Filming Season 6 Following Death of Queen Elizabeth II, “Out of Respect”

Netflix is mourning the loss of Queen Elizabeth II. After the news of the 96-year-old’s passing earlier today, writer of The Crown, Peter Morgan, said the Emmy Award-winning show will stop filming “out of respect.”

“The Crown is a love letter to her and I’ve nothing to add for now, just silence and respect,” Morgan told Deadline about the show, which is set to start production on its sixth season this fall. “I expect we will stop filming out of respect too.”

He said he would not be making any further comment about Queen Elizabeth’s death.

The outlet also reported that Netflix had been preparing for this day, adding that Stephen Daldry, who directed several episodes in the first season, previously said, “None of us know when that time will come but it would be right and proper to show respect to the Queen. It would be a simple tribute and a mark of respect. She’s a global figure and it’s what we should do.”

Queen Elizabeth II donned her crown for 70 years, making her the longest-reigning monarch in British history. The Netflix series, which is slated to premiere its fifth season in November, has followed her journey since ascending to the throne at 25 years old, with Claire Foy, Olivia Colman, and (soon-to-be) Imelda Staunton playing Her Majesty.

Just last week it was announced that television rookies Rufus Kampa and Ed McVey would play Prince William while Meg Bellamy would play Kate Middleton in Season 6, however, it looks like they may have a little extra time to study their lines.

All four seasons of The Crown are currently streaming on Netflix, with Season 5 still set to premiere in November.
