‘Daredevil: Born Again’ on Disney+: Everything You Need to Know

She-Hulk, Ironheart, Secret Invasion — there are already plenty of Marvel Studios TV shows to freak out about, and now we have one more. The series is Daredevil: Born Again, a new street-level epic that was announced as part of Marvel Studios’ massive presentation at San Diego Comic-Con. The announcement confirmed years of rumors about the fate of Daredevil after its surprise cancellation by Netflix four years ago. Not only are Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio back on screen as Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, they are back in a big way.

But what’s the deal with Daredevil: Born Again? Do we have any information about the show’s cast or speculation about how it ties into the Netflix series? And do we have to wait years to see Charlie Cox suit up again? We’re just at the start of Daredevil’s journey back to our screens so not a lot has been revealed just yet… but here’s everything we know about Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+ anyway.

When will Daredevil: Born Again premiere on Disney+?

We’re likely a long way away from an official release date, but Marvel Studios expects Daredevil to premiere on Disney+ in early 2024.

Who is in the Daredevil cast?

Charlie Cox returns as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, as does Vincent D’Onofrio in his role as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin. They’re also the first two Daredevil characters to pop up in the MCU after the series’ cancellation (Cox in Spider-Man: No Way Home and D’Onofrio in Hawkeye). Between now and Born Again’s premiere, Cox will appear in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law this fall. And in 2023, both Cox and D’Onofrio will have a role to play in the Disney+ series Echo.

As for the rest of the cast from Netflix’s Daredevil series, their involvement remains unknown. Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), Elodie Yung (Elektra), Wilson Bethel (Bullseye), etc. — any of them could come back, but no announcement has been made yet.

Is Daredevil: Born Again a continuation of Netflix’s Daredevil?

Possibly? Most likely? We don’t know, mainly because we don’t yet know if the Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk that we’ve seen recently are the same Matt and Wilson or variants. If they’re variants, that means the Netflix shows take place in another reality across the multiverse. If they aren’t, then that confirms that the Netflix shows are canon canon.

The only clue we have so far might be the costume that we see ol’ hornhead wearing in the She-Hulk trailer — and it’s a clue that points in both directions.

The fact that we know Matt Murdock has his powers and a superhero costume indicates that not only is he Daredevil, but he’s probably been Daredevil for a while. Then again, he’s wearing his yellow and brown/red costume — which is the costume that he briefly wore in his first appearance back in the ’60s. So it’s possible that he’s a new hero and wearing this costume as a nod to the comics. Or maybe Matt wanted to change things up after years of wearing the red and black costume! We don’t know!

What is Born Again in the comics?

“Born Again” is the name of a Daredevil storyarc — issues #227-231 — by writer Frank Miller and artist David Mazzucchelli that was published in 1986. In the story, Kingpin learns Daredevil’s true identity from a strung out Karen Page. Oh, yeah, in the comics, Karen Page left the law offices to become an actress and, when reintroduced by Miller after a 14-year absence from the comic, had become a porn star and heroin addict. Using this information Kingpin then systematically dismantled Matt Murdock’s life and pushed him further than he’d ever been pushed before. It’s one of the best Daredevil stories for many reasons.

But don’t expect the new series to tell that story… because it’s already been told. Numerous plot points — Murdock nearly being assassinated by a taxicab plunging into the river (“there is no corpse”), the Nuke storyline (he popped up in Jessica Jones played by Wil Traval), Matt being saved by  a nun who may or may not be his mom — have all been done already. It’s more likely that “Born Again” is being used in the meta sense, because Daredevil the TV show is literally being born again after getting cancelled by Netflix.

How many episodes are in Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+?

There will be a staggering 18 episodes of Daredevil: Born Again. That’s twice as long as the longest MCU Disney+ shows we’ve seen so far. Of course we don’t know how those 18 episodes will be released. It’s entirely possible that they could be broken up into two 9-episode or three 6-episode chunks.

Who is writing and directing Daredevil: Born Again?

Matt Corman and Chris Ord (Covert Affairs) are attached to the new series as writers and executive producers. No director has been announced yet.

Is there a Daredevil: Born Again trailer?

There is not, but there he does appear in the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law trailer!
