New Movies and Shows to Stream This Weekend: The Gray Man, The Last Movie Stars, Anything’s Possible + More

If you’ve heard only one thing about Netflix’s The Gray Man, it’s probably the fact that the new action film from the Russo brothers is the streamer’s most expensive project to date. The spy thriller is already out in theaters but as of this Friday, you can also check it out on the streaming service. Not feeling the action? Ethan Hawke can help with that. The actor goes behind the camera to direct The Last Movie Stars, a six-part series on HBO Max that chronicles the personal and professional lives of Hollywood icons Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, whose 50-year marriage is still the gold standard for show business partnerships. Billy Porter is another actor-turned-director with a new film this week, he makes his debut with Anything’s Possible, a love story where Eva Reign stars as a trans teen struggling to let herself fall in love.

New on Netflix July 22: The Gray Man

Where do you go after you’ve directed some of the world’s top-grossing action movies? For the Russo brothers, who helmed Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War and End Game, you make The Gray Man, a movie where Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans play former colleagues at the CIA, but Gosling’s character, Court Gentry, uncovers some deep agency secrets, so obviously Evans’ character, Lloyd Hansen, must chase him around the world to try and kill him. The film co-stars Regé-Jean Page, Ana de Armas, and Indian actor Dhanush, and it cost over $200 million to make. As I say, come for the Duke of Hastings, but stay for the big budget blowouts.

New on HBO July 21: The Last Movie Stars

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward are both award-winning actors, on stage and on screen. But perhaps more than their professional work, the couple is known for their enduring marriage and their charity work. After watching HBO Max’s The Last Movie Stars, which features commentary from the likes of Martin Scorcese, Sidnet Lumet, Elia Kazan, and Sally Field, you won’t need further proof that their impact on Hollywood is everlasting.

New on Amazon Prime Video July 22: Anything’s Possible

Dating in high school is rough for even the most average cis-het types, so imagine the anxiety and stress it must bring for a newly-out trans student. In Anything’s Possible, Eva Reign stars as Kelsa, a trans girl whose classmates previously knew as a boy, which she fears will complicate her social life and her love life. Once she develops a crush on a classmate named Khal (Abubakr Ali), the two have to navigate a tricky new landscape where they fear not being accepted into each other’s world.
