‘The View’ Split Over Alicia Silverstone Sleeping with Her 11-Year-Old: “Clueless” or “What’s the Big Fear?”

The View was divided over one of yesterday’s oddest headlines, sparking a debate about Alicia Silverstone‘s admission that she still sleeps with her 11-year-old son, Bear. The panel took a break from politics to chat pop culture, with half of them arguing in favor of Silverstone’s unconventional practice and the others firmly shutting it down.

Their discussion came after the Clueless actress appeared on the Ellen Fisher Podcast, where she said, “Bear and I still sleep together. And I’ll be in trouble for saying that, but I don’t really care.”

While Silverstone didn’t “get in trouble” with Whoopi Goldberg, she certainly got a hefty dose of disbelief from The View co-host, who responded to Silverstone’s comments with a frown and a quick shake of her head.

“I don’t know any 11-year-old that wants to sleep with me,” Goldberg quipped. When she opened up the panel for commentary, guest co-host Lindsey Granger was first to chime in, offering the line, “I don’t know Alicia Silverstone, but I feel like this is a little clueless.”

Her pun got plenty of giggles from the studio and from around the table, including a chuckle from Joy Behar, who has had a frosty relationship with Granger. Her laugh didn’t slip past Granger, who noted, “Oh Joy, I got a laugh, okay!,” but Behar didn’t let her win that easily.

Gesturing to Sara Haines, who was seated beside her, Behar said, “I was laughing at her.” Cold!

And in typical Behar fashion, she disagreed with Granger, who said she “couldn’t imagine” having her own daughter sleep in her bed at age 11. Behar insisted there was nothing wrong with co-sleeping with an 11-year-old, telling the panel, “Europeans do it. What’s the big fear?”

Her take got a high-five from Sunny Hostin, who said her teenage son will come into her room and ask to get into bed with her and talk. Goldberg, still firmly team no-co-sleeping, insisted, “that’s different. He’s not sleeping with you.”

While Silverstone’s practice proved controversial at The View table, it should come as no surprise to anyone who’s been following the self-professed “natural mama” these days. After all, this is the same woman who said she chewed her son’s food for him before he ate it.

The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
