Did Vladimir Putin “Plant” Drugs on Brittney Griner? Joy Behar Thinks so on ‘The View’

The View’s Joy Behar is never shy calling out government officials, especially when she feels innocent people are being mistreated. And during today’s hot topics segment, Behar suggested that the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin,  may have planted the cannabis vape cartridges in Griner’s luggage that led to her current detainment.

“How do we know this white man Putin didn’t have his operatives plant that stuff on her?” Behar said on the show.

Brittney Griner is an African-American professional basketball player on the Phoenix Mercury team. In February, Griner was in Russia playing overseas for the UMMC Ekaterinburg during her off-season from the WNBA. While heading home, customs service officials detained her after allegedly finding vape cartridges containing hashish oil in her luggage at Sheremetyevo airport.

According to the Associated Press, a Russian court will begin Brittney Griner’s trial on Friday, and will also extend her detention by six more months. In Russia, less than 1% of criminal defendants are found not guilty, and if Griner is convicted, she can face up to 10 years in prison.

Confused and upset, Whoopi Goldberg came to Griner’s defense, as well “How dumb would she have to be to not know — this is not a stupid woman. This is an amazing woman .. so she knows the rules. So this is all B.S.”

Goldberg is not the only American who was disturbed about the outcome of the WNBA star’s treatment in Russia. The director of The Queen of Basketball, Ben Proudfoot, dedicated his Oscar speech to the athlete back in March.

“President Biden, Bring Brittney Griner home,” Produfoot said at the time.

Back on The View, Sonny Hostin turned part of the blame from Russia to the WBNA, noting that, “Lebron wouldn’t still be there! One of the reasons she was there is because we pay our female basketball players so poorly in the United States– and it’s shameful.”

The View airs weekdays at 11/10c.
