When and Where Is ‘The Black Phone’ Coming Out on Streaming?

Never talk to strangers on the phone… unless they are the ghosts of dead teenagers and they’re trying to help you escape the prison cell of a mass murderer. That’s the basic gist of The Black Phone, a new supernatural horror film opening in theaters this weekend.

Based on the short story by Joe Hill—the son of horror master Stephen King—The Black Phone is directed by Scott Derrickson, who also adapted the script with co-writer C. Robert Cargill. The film stars Ethan Hawke as “the grabber,” aka a serial killer who is kidnapping children in a suburban Colorado town in 1978. Young Mason Thames stars as Finney, the grabber’s latest victim, who is imprisoned in a soundproof basement with nothing but a disconnected phone. But though he can’t dial 911, Finney does hear voices through the phone—voices who might be able to help him.

The Black Phone is sure to be scary, so if you’d rather wait to watch this in the safety of your own home—with all the lights on—here’s what you need to know about when and where The Black Phone will be streaming.

WHERE TO WATCH THE BLACK PHONE:

UPDATE (7/18/2022): After just four weeks in theaters, The Black Phone is now available to rent on digital for $19.99, or to buy on digital for $24.99, on platforms like Prime Video, Vudu, YouTube, and more.

WHERE WILL THE BLACK PHONE BE STREAMING?

In addition to being available for purchase on digital platforms, you’ll also be able to stream The Black Phone on Peacock Premium — free, with a subscription to Peacock Premium.

Starting with the 2022 film slate, Universal movies are now going to Peacock Premium as soon as 45 days after opening in theaters. (That said, it could very well be later than 45 days.)

WHEN WILL THE BLACK PHONE BE ON PEACOCK?

There is not yet a Peacock streaming release date for The Black Phone. That said, we can make an educated guess as to when The Black Phone will be on the streaming service. Another recent Universal movie, The Northman, began streaming on Peacock Premium after a 45-day theatrical run, and was also available on VOD the next day.

If The Black Phone follows a similar streaming release strategy, you can expect The Black Phone to release on Peacock around the second week of August 2022.

That said, this is only a prediction. It’s possible Universal will keep The Black Phone in theaters for longer, especially if the film is doing well. We’ll have to wait and see.
