Where was ‘Jaws’ Filmed?

Jaws is a film that will truly live on forever (as will its iconic original score by John Williams). It’s hard to believe that Steven Spielberg’s Academy Award-winning classic thriller will be shortly celebrating its 47th anniversary since its initial June 20, 1975 premiere, but alas, time flies you’re reminiscing over scary sharks terrorizing innocents in New England (as the old saying definitely goes).

Jaws follows a man-eating great white shark that begins tormenting people in New England’s tourist town of Amity Island, sparking the local police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) to team up with marine biologist Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and professional shark hunter Quint (Robert Shaw) in order to be able to take down the ferocious blood-thirsty beast.

Amity Island’s mayor, Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton), further complicates things for the men by refusing to shut down the beaches due to the crushing negative impact the action would have on his resort town’s summer economy, leading to a heart-pounding race against time to stop the massive shark before it can take any more lives.

Whether you are a longtime fan of the movie or are just discovering it now, you may be wondering if Amity Island is a real place and, if not, where it was filmed. Here’s everything you need to know about Jaws‘ filming locations:

JAWS FILMING LOCATIONS: WHERE WAS JAWS FILMED?

Amity Island is indeed a fictional town that was created for the movie. However, the film at least stays partially true to its tale by filming in New England, where the made-up Amity Island is supposed to be. Jaws was filmed for the most part on location at Martha’s Vineyard, an affluent summer resort island south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, the American Legion Memorial Bridge, and Chilmark are some of the specific locations within Martha’s Vineyard in which many of the most memorable scenes were shot. Some scenes were also filmed in California, off the coast as well as at Universal Studios, and even at one of the film’s executive’s Los Angeles swimming pool. A few ocean-set scenes were also filmed in South Australia.
