Triple-threat world famous performer Jennifer Lopez is doing so much more than just showing off her singing and dancing skills in the upcoming Netflix Original title Halftime. The documentary film, which premieres on the platform next week on June 14 gives a peek behind the curtain at J.Lo in the lead up to, during, and after her performance at the Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show, as well as an inside look at the performer’s incredible career acting, singing, and dancing over the past 33 years.
Halftime celebrates the 52 year-old pop culture icon’s tenacity, work ethic, and impact by reflecting on where she came from, who she has become, and some of the highs and lows in between. However, you don’t have to wait until the film’s release to do some Lopez celebrating of your own.
Here are seven must-watch Jennifer Lopez movies to stream before you check out Halftime on Netflix next week:
'Selena'
It’s only logical to start with Lopez’s first main lead film role as the titular Selena Quintanilla Pérez in 1997 biographical musical-drama Selena, for which she earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture. With this star-making performance, J.Lo proved that she more than had what it took to carry a tune and a film, and she does both in Selena as she tells the story of woman who went from a young Texas-born Mexican-American nobody to a renowned Tejano music star, culminating in the singer’s tragic death at the young age of 23.
'Out of Sight'
Steven Soderbergh’s critically-acclaimed crime-comedy Out of Sight begins with Jack Foley (George Clooney), AKA America’s most successful bank robber, escaping from a Florida prison. His hopes for a clean and easy getaway are dashed, however, when he ends up kidnapping U.S. Marshal Karen Sisco (Lopez), culminating in a connection between the two that defies logic, as they become attracted to one another despite being on opposite sides of the law.
After Jack successfully escapes prison and goes on the run, Karen dedicates herself to chasing him down… But is it to lock him up behind bars, or to lock him down in an unforgettable romance? Watch this Academy Award-nominated film now to find out.
'Enough'
Based on Anna Quindlen’s bestselling 1998 novel Black and Blue, Enough is a 2002 thriller about working-class waitress Slim (Lopez), whose life completely changes after marrying wealthy and gallant Mitch Hiller (Billy Campbell). While their life together is initially blissful and idyllic as the two live in a nice suburban area with their young daughter, Gracie (Tessa Allen), Slim’s seemingly-perfect existence shatters after finding out that Mitch has been cheating on her.
When she confronts him about it, he physically and verbally abuses her, sparking Slim to take action by grabbing Gracie and fleeing after law enforcement fails to take action to apprehend Mitch. As Slim begins her journey on the run, she finds that her troubles are only beginning as an increasingly-obsessive Mitch utilizes his immense amount of wealth and connections to chase the two and make their lives hell.
'Maid in Manhattan'
Maid in Manhattan is a beloved and classic J.Lo rom-com about Marisa Ventura (Lopez), a born-and-raised New Yorker who works as a maid at a fancy Manhattan hotel in order to support her 10 year-old son Ty (Tyler Posey) as a single mom. Marisa’s life suddenly gets a lot more complicated when high-class senatorial candidate Christopher Marshall (Ralph Fiennes) meets her at the hotel and, mistaking her for a fellow guest, becomes immediately smitten.
As a result, Marisa is challenged to balance working hard to give herself and her son a better life with pursuing the fairy tale romance she’d never thought she’d have, all while trying to keep her true identity a secret.
'Shall We Dance?'
J.Lo gets to show off both her incredible dancing and acting skills in the 2004 romantic comedy-drama Shall We Dance?, which also features fellow big-name talents like Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, Lisa Ann Walter, Stanley Tucci, Bobby Cannavale, and Anita Gillette. The film follows lawyer John Clark (Gere), who, convinced that his life is missing something, feels listless and uninspired despite having a successful career and loving family. When John spots a beautiful dancer named Paulina (Lopez) in a dance studio on his way home from work one evening, he spontaneously decides to sign up for a ballroom dancing class.
In doing so, John surprises himself by swiftly falling in love with dancing itself, finding that the activity ignites something in him that he’s been searching for all this time. But as he dedicates himself to his newfound passion, his wife Beverly (Susan Sarandon) grows suspicious of where he’s been spending all of his free time lately, and is determined to get to the bottom of her husband’s mysterious absences.
'Hustlers'
J.Lo’s work in Lorene Scafaria’s 2019 crime comedy-drama Hustlers is yet another reminder of the performer’s versatility, talent, and constant growth as she expertly takes on the role of veteran stripped Ramona Vega in this film about a group of NYC strippers who band together to turn the tables on their wealthy Wall Street Clients by drugging them in order to fleece them for money in the wake of 2008’s nation-wide financial crisis.
Based on Jessica Pressler’s 2015 New York magazine article entitled “The Hustlers at Scores”, this empowering and enthralling film features the work of strong and hard-working women like Lopez, Constance Wu, Keke Palmer, Lizzo, Lili Reinhart, Cardi B, and Julia Stiles, so definitely queue Hustlers up before checking out Halftime.
'Marry Me'
J.Lo returns to crushing it in rom-coms in Marry Me, which was released earlier this year and immediately delighted many with its unique premise and charm. The romantic dramedy based on Bobby Crosby’s 2012 graphic novel of the same name stars Lopez as pop superstar Kat Valdez, who is about to go onstage at her packed concert for her third (and, she hopes, last) high-profile marriage, this time with fellow chart-topper Bastian (Maluma).
But when Kat finds out that Bastian has been cheating on her, she goes onstage and has a breakdown that leads her to lock eyes with divorced math teacher Charlie Gilbert (Owen Wilson) and call him out from the crowd to marry her then and there onstage for the world to see. As these two strangers with very different lives become newlyweds overnight, their new relationship is tested at every turn and everyone around them is holding their breath waiting for it all to fall apart in a blaze.
