Jason Mantzoukas, Megan Mullally and More Cast in ‘Percy Jackson’ Disney+ Series

Weeks after announcing its main three cast membersPercy Jackson and the Olympians is revealing more series stars as the Disney+ project kicks off its very first day of filming. Author Rick Riordan shared new adult cast members in a June 2 post on his blog, where he wrote, “The excitement is so thick you could cut it with a celestial bronze ballpoint pen!”

Percy Jackson previously announced Walker Scobell will star in the titular role, along with Aryan Simhadri and Leah Sava Jeffries, who have been cast as Percy’s friends Grover and Annabeth. Today, Riordan unveiled an impressive list of five additional cast members, all of whom will appear in the first few episodes of the series.

Virginia Kull has been cast as Sally Jackson, Riordan shared, and even revealed that her table read for the show’s first episode “moved us to tears.” Kull has appeared in Big Little Lies, Boardwalk Empire, 2017’s Twin Peaks and Super Pumped.

Along with Kull, Percy Jackson also cast comedian Jason Mantzoukas, who will play Mr. D / Dionysus. According to Riordan’s blog, Mantzoukas is “Self-described as ‘100% Greek,'” making him “the perfect guy to inhabit everyone’s favorite grumpy wine god and head of camp, Dionysus.” Mantzoukas is known for his roles on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Star Trek: Prodigy and The Good Place. If you haven’t seen him in any of those, there’s a chance you’ve at least heard him in Netflix’s Big Mouth, in which he voices Jay Bilzerian.

Another exciting Percy Jackson addition is Megan Mullally, who has been cast as Mrs. Dodds / Alecto. Mullally joins the Disney+ series after countless roles in film and TV, including a starring part in Will & Grace, and appearances in Bob’s Burgers, Parks and Recreation, Happy Endings and Party Down.

Iconic actor Glynn Turman is also joining Percy Jackson as Mr. Brunner / Chiron. Riordan wrote that Turman is the “perfect” choice to play “the immortal centaur and trainer of heroes at Camp Half-Blood.” Before his turn in the Percy Jackson universe, Turman appeared in Super 8, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Wire, and Mr. Mercedes.

The final addition to Percy Jackson is Timm Sharp, who will play Gabe Ugliano. Sharp “had us laughing out loud with his take on Gabe Ugliano,” Riordan wrote, “and we can’t wait to see him play stepdad to Walker Scobell’s Percy Jackson!” Sharp has previously appeared in Enlightened, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The Conners.

While Riordan left us with plenty of exciting news in one post, he promised there is more to come. The author signed off by telling his fans he’ll share more “inside scoops about how filming is going” and will reveal “further casting information” soon.
