Your hash-tagged prayers have officially been answered. After over two months of waiting, HBO Max has renewed Our Flag Means Death, David Jenkins’ pirate-themed romantic comedy, for Season 2. HBO, we see what you did announcing this renewal on the first day of Pride. But next time it’d be nice to get an earlier heads up so fans don’t spiral on Twitter.
“We felt the show was special while we were making it, but fans’ open-armed embrace of the inhabitants of the Revenge makes heading into a second season all the more sweet,” series creator and executive producer David Jenkins said in a press release. “Thanks to our team at HBO Max, our invested executive producers, and our wildly enthusiastic audience for making another voyage to this world possible.”
“We are so happy to bring this truly one-of-a-kind series back! We congratulate David, Taika [Waititi], Rhys [Darby] and the entire talented cast and crew, and thank the show’s fans for embracing it wholeheartedly,” Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content for HBO Max, added.
At the moment, little is known about this upcoming second season. We don’t even have a cast or creators list, though it seems inevitable that Jenkins, Waititi, and Darby will be returning for a new adventure. But for all of the mystery surrounding this upcoming installment, HBO Max did release this teaser while describing Season 1: “To their surprise, the wildly different Stede and Blackbeard found more than friendship on the high seas… they found love. Now they have to survive it.”
That survival quote aligns with what Jenkins told Decider he wanted to do if there was a second season:

It looks like we’re getting the angry pirate breakup story we’ve always wanted. Our Flag Means Death first premiered in March of this year. Soon after its release, it became one of the top five HBO Max comedies to launch on the service. Its first season currently has a 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. All of this acclaim happened before Our Flag Means Death dropped its big twist, which is a major reason for its intense fanfare. Season 1’s finale proved that the romantic vibes between Stede and Ed weren’t subtext; they were showrunner-written text.
Last season ended with a miscommunication that led to Stede returning to his wife and Ed sailing off with their crew. After some self-reflection, Stede has finally comes to terms with what he really wants, and that person is Ed. But will the notoriously vengeful Blackbeard have it in his heart to forgive the man he loves? Our crossbones are crossed.
