Disney+ Grows To Nearly 138 Million Subscribers In Second Quarter

Disney+ has revealed its subscriber numbers for the second quarter of 2022, announcing in advance of an earnings call today that they have added 7.9 million subscribers. The new numbers bring Disney+ up to 137.7 million subscribers, total.

Disney CEO Bob Chapek will address the numbers on an earnings call later today, but adding in Hulu and ESPN+, that brings Disney’s streaming reach to 205.6 million subscribers total (with some possible overlap). This also brings Disney+ within 84 million subscribers of rival Netflix, and easily holds onto its slot as the number two most subscribed streaming service.

The latest numbers come after Disney+ shared during a February earnings call that they had beat their 2021 year-end expectations to reach 129.8 million total subscribers. During the call, the company revealed they had added 11.8 million new subscribers after adding just 2 million during the prior quarter.

Disney originally aimed to lock in between 60 and 90 million subscribers within four years of launching the platform. Its February numbers far exceeded the company’s predictions, surpassing 90 million subscribers in a year and a half after launching Disney+ in November 2019.

Disney+’s latest subscriber stats come after the streamer debuted West Side Story, Turning Red, Moon Knight, Olivia Rodrigo: driving home 2 u, Better Nate than Ever and The Quest. The streamer has even more content lined up for summer, with Obi-Wan Kenobi, Sneakerella, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, We Feed People and more landing on Disney+ in the coming weeks.

The latest numbers for Disney come as Netflix — widely considered an early winner in the streaming wars — is starting to falter after years of success. The streaming giant reported its worst quarter since 2015 in January, revealing they had lost 200,00 subscribers in the first three months of the year. Despite the dip, Netflix still had 221.64 million subscribers.
