‘1883’ Star Sam Elliott Drags ‘Yellowstone,’ Compares It To Soap Opera

If you thought Sam Elliott was done picking apart modern Westerns, think again! During a recent appearance on WTF with Marc Maron —yep, the same one where he went after The Power of the Dog — the 1883 star revealed that he’s not too crazy about the hit drama Yellowstone, despite starring on its prequel. Apparently, his distaste lies in its similarity to a certain beloved ’80s soap opera.

“I’m not a Yellowstone fan. I don’t watch Yellowstone,” Elliott said. “I love [star Kevin] Costner. There’s a lot of good people on the cast, a few of them I’ve worked with before — nothing against any of them — but it’s just too much like fucking Dallas or something for me.”

Dallas, which told the story of a Texas family vying for control of their massive oil empire, ran for 14 seasons. In other words, the show more than rivals Yellowstone for all-American drama!

Elliott has made it clear that he’s picky about his Westerns, previously dismissing The Power of the Dog as an “evisceration of the American myth.”

Apparently, 1883 passed his rugged criteria! The Yellowstone prequel delves into how the Dutton family first made a name for themselves, making a perilous journey from Fort Worth, Texas to Montana, where they eventually founded Yellowstone Ranch. Elliott stars as Shea Brennan, a gruff ex-Union Army captain who shepherds the Duttons along their wagon trail.

So will the next Yellowstone prequel, 1932, win Elliott’s blessing? That answer to that question is as unpredictable as the Wild West.
