‘A Discovery of Witches’ Ending Explained: Do Matthew and Diana Live Happily Ever After?

A Discovery of Witches took its final bow on Sundance Now, Shudder, and AMC+ this morning, showing us Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer) and Matthew Clairmont’s (Matthew Goode) ultimate fate. The penultimate episode of A Discovery of Witches ended with Diana learning that Matthew was being held captive by evil vampire Benjamin Fuchs (Jacob Ifan). But where? And could she and her friends move fast enough to save Matthew’s life? Moreover, what would it mean now that Diana had not only rediscovered The Book of Life, but become the object itself?

A Discovery of Witches is based on the best-selling All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness. The first season kicked off with American witch and scholar Diana discovering a mysterious manuscript called Ashmole 782 in Oxford’s Bodleian Library. Secretly known as The Book of Life, Ashmole 782 unlocked Diana’s hidden powers and drew vampires, daemons, and witches to her door. One of those vampires was the dashing Matthew Clairmont. For the past three seasons, A Discovery of Witches has been equally invested in Matthew and Diana’s love story as it’s been focused on the retrieval of The Book of Life.

So what did The Book of Life reveal and did Matthew and Diana get a happy ending? Here’s everything you need to know about the ending of A Discovery of Witches.

A Discovery of Witches Ending Explained: What Happens in the Series Finale?

With the help of Baldwin (Peter McDonald), Diana and friends realize that Benjamin is torturing Matthew in same manner Philippe was during World War II. They journey to Chelm, Poland and discover a delirious Matthew whom Diana realizes is just an enchantment. She goes on to face the battle alone. Diana soon realizes that Satu (Malin Buska) is her opponent and rather easily binds her, taking her powers away. She then uses her magic to create a bow and arrow to slay Benjamin with. (As she’s summoning the bow, we get an emotional flashback to every key scene in Diana’s life.) They rescue Matthew and bring him to Ysabeau (Lindsay Duncan) at Sept Tours. He emerges healed! (Yay!)

The Book of Life reveals that the key to everything is daemon DNA. Matthew has daemon DNA, Diana has it, and it’s what sparks blood rage. Moreover, the recession of daemon DNA is responsible for the decline in witches’ powers and vampire lifespans. So long as the Covenant, which keeps magical beings and humans separate by law, remains, vampires, witches, and their ilk will go extinct. They need daemon DNA, people!

Baldwin and Matthew suggest that Diana take the de Clairmont seat at the Congregation to tell the vampires what The Book of Life has revealed. She defends her actions and argues against the Covenant, saying that they need to intermingle and accept that witches, vampires, daemons, and humans are related to one another. This is…controversial, to say the least. Especially since Gerbert (Trevor Eve) believes Diana is a criminal. But the Congregation votes in Diana’s favor to abolish the Covenant. Agatha (Tanya Moodie), a daemon, is elected the new leader.

The final shot is of Diana and Matthew dancing in Sept Tours, their friends and family happily gathered around them. Love wins! Bigotry loses! Magical beings will continue to be magical!

Will There Be A Discovery of Witches Season 4?

Alas, A Discovery of Witches is done for good. There are no plans to make any more seasons of the show nor is there any news about possible spin-offs. That means the Discovery of Witches finale is the end of Matthew and Diana’s story. But who knows, as Matthew narrates, every ending is a new beginning and we have yet to learn what happens to the twins, Philip and Rebecca.
