Oscars Fans React to Twitter Fan-Favorite Category: “I’m Not Doing This Good Luck to Y’all”

Every Twitter user has just been promoted to “Academy voter.” Ahead of the 94th Academy Awards, the Oscars have announced a new program that’ll select the most popular film on social media in 2021. If you want to see your favorite film recognized at this year’s ceremony, start tweeting now: it’s going to take you 20 tweets daily to see it win big at the Oscars.

Beginning this Monday, Twitter users will have the chance to vote on films that were released in 2021 using the hashtag #OscarsFanFavorite, regardless if the film was actually nominated for an Oscar. The film that receives the most fan votes by March 3 will be recognized at the official awards broadcast on March 27. Users can also share their favorite movie moments with the hashtag #OscarsCheerMoment for a chance to win a year of free movies.

And the Oscars is doubling down on this new Twitter strategy, too. Three lucky Twitter users who cast their votes between Feb. 14 and March 3 will be invited with guests to have an all-expenses-paid trip to Los Angeles to present an Oscar award at the 2023 ceremony.

But Twitter users weren’t so thrilled by this idea. The entry limit is a whopping 20 times per day, meaning that stans will have to copy paste over and over and over again if they even want their favorite movie to see the light of day at the Oscars.

“oh I’m not doing this,” one Twitter user shared. “good luck to y’all.”

This isn’t the first time the Oscars have tinkered with an idea to award a popular movie at their prestigious ceremony. Back in 2019, the Academy nearly created a “Best Popular Movie” category, but the idea was foiled. Now, they’re using social media to promote popular movies. Some fans find this a little foolish, especially since the most popular movie will most likely have already won with stellar box office reports.

“So you mean to tell me DON’T LOOK UP is gonna win Best Picture AND ‘fan-favorite at the Oscars?” one user tweeted with a side-eye emoji.

Still, the idea of a free trip to L.A. wooed plenty of Twitter users. “wait they’re offering an all expenses paid trip to la to present the oscars for three twitter users, i never said anything bad about the academy,” one user shared.

The 94th Academy Awards will air on Sunday, March 27 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
