Jimmy Kimmel Blasts Oscars For Nominating ‘Don’t Look Up’ Over ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

Jimmy Kimmel just can’t let his ex (the Oscars) go. The former Academy Awards host blasted the 2022 nominations during his monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night (Feb. 8), destroying movies like Don’t Look Up and The Power of the Dog to mourn the lack of recognition for Marvel‘s Spider-Man: No Way Home. Sorry, Kimmel: not everyone’s favorites can earn nominations.

“The big winner, nomination-wise, was The Power of the Dog,” Kimmel began in his Oscar rant. “The Power of the Dog got 12 nominations, one for every person who saw it.”

The upset host then went on to list a fake list of Best Picture nominees, leading into his complaints about this year’s snubs: “I don’t want no snubs,” he quoted TLC. Although he poured one out for Lady Gaga and House of Gucci, the biggest snub, he said, was the latest MCU blockbuster.

“The biggest snub today, in my opinion — and I’m actually even angry about this, I’m embarrassed to say — is the unforgivable omission of Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Kimmel said, earning some mixed reactions from the audience. “How did that not get one of the 10 nominations for Best Picture? There were only 11 movies made this past year.”

Kimmel couldn’t give it up. With that, he went on to list all the reasons No Way Home was worthy of a nomination.

“Forget the fact that the movie made $700 million and is still going,” he said. “This was a great movie! It wasn’t even in the top 10 best movies of the year? There were three spider-men! One of them was Andrew Garfield, who is a Best Actor nominee. Benedict Cumberbatch played Doctor Strange, he’s another Best Actor nominee.”

Hopefully, Don’t Look Up wasn’t your favorite film. Placing a wedge between the Spider-Man and Don’t Look Up community, Kimmel blasted Netflix’s Adam McKay satire.

“You’re telling me Don’t Look Up was better than Spider-Man? It most certainly was not. Even if you go by the critics’ reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, Don’t Look Up top critics gave it a 40, Spider-Man got a 90,” Kimmel pulled the receipts. “For god’s sake, Jackass Forever has an 89! When did we decide that the best picture has to be serious? As far as I know, this was not the point of feature films when they started making them.”

To round out his ranting and raving about the nominations, Kimmel forecasted why the Academy voted Don’t Look Up into the category but avoided No Way Home.

“The Academy voters, they looked at the list, they saw the names Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep, they checked that box,” he said. “Then, they put their kids in the car and they went to see the movie Spider-Man. And they loved it, but they didn’t vote for it.”

Kimmel had one last request: Doctor Strange, could you go back in time and make Spider-Man: No Way Home nominated for Best Picture?
