The Euphoria Season 2 premiere on HBO introduced a volatile new love triangle between bad boy Nate (Jacob Elordi), his bitter and beautiful ex Maddy (Alexa Demie), and Maddy’s best friend Cassie (Sydney Sweeney). Nate and Maddy’s toxic, abusive, on-and-off relationship was one of many tragic arcs that played out during Euphoria Season 1 and now it seems that a brokenhearted Cassie has been pulled into the storm. Maddy almost catches Cassie impulsively hooking up with Nate in the Euphoria Season 2 premiere in a bathroom sequence that borders on horror.
While everyone is technically single when Euphoria Season 2 begins, from the moment that Nate picks a drunk Cassie up at a gas station, it’s clear the two are flirting with danger. We see a sequence where Nate speeds while downing beers and Cassie pulls her panties down after getting splashed by booze because of his driving. It all culminates when the two are caught hooking up in the bathroom during the party by none other than Maddy herself. While Maddy doesn’t see her best friend having sex with her ex, she badgers the two, believing that Nate is in there by himself. Nate hides Cassie in the bathtub and leaves her to sit, crumpled up in terror, as Maddy pees (and then flirts with a dude played by BMF‘s Demetrius Flenory Jr.). What follows is a truly tense sequence that’s sold by the performance of Sydney Sweeney.
When Decider caught up with Sydney Sweeney, she explained that Cassie has been drawn to the notorious Nate for a while, but the Season 2 premiere offered a perfect maelstrom to throw them together.
“It’s Nate,” Sweeney said. “She knows him. She’s also is coming from a very low, lonely place. She’s drunk and she kind of goes on instincts instead of thoughts.”
Sweeney added that shooting the bathroom sequence was “terrifying” thanks to the work of one particular Euphoria Season 2 co-star.
“Alexa [Demie] was on the other side of the door banging the entire time and I was just like, ‘Oh my god, if I was actually in this situation, I would be freaking out,'” Sweeney said. “So Cassie was freaking out.”
Cassie might have been freaking out, but at least her secret is safe. For now.
