5 Most Important Moments In ‘Yellowstone’ Season 4, Episode 10

In Yellowstone Season 4, Episode 10, entitled, “Grass On The Streets and Weeds on the Rooftops,” the Duttons are at a crossroads. Written by series co-creator Taylor Sheridan and directed by Stephen Kay, this episode starts off with Beth (Kelly Reilly) making amends with John (Kevin Costner) thanks to some gentle counsel from Rip (Cole Hauser). Beth’s many other issues are far from resolved, however. She rips out Carter’s (Finn Little) heart by rejecting him after he calls her “Mama” (“I’m nobody’s mother ever, got it?”), and she pursues her plan to call on Terrell Riggins (Bruno Amato) in prison.

Elsewhere, things are also rocky for John’s favorite protestor, Summer Higgins (Piper Perabo). John makes good on his promise to speak to Judge Mitchell Davis on Summer’s behalf, but Davis is unmoved. Even though her legal team agreed to a plea deal with the prosecution of a 15-year suspended sentence and a 10,000 dollar fine, Davis ultimately has the final say. He sentences her to more than 37 years (!) for her various charges. Although John manages to get Davis to suspend the felony assault charges, Summer will still be looking at “8 months of hell” behind bars before she’ll be eligible for parole.

After getting fired by Market Equites CEO Caroline Warner (Jacki Weaver) who got wise to her, Beth poses as a hooker to visit Riggins in prison. He reveals that Jamie (Wes Bentley) came to see him and that’s all Beth needs to hear. On her way home, she kidnaps a priest and demands that he perform a quickie wedding at the Yellowstone for her and Rip with John, Carter and Lloyd as the witnesses. With her affairs in order, Beth confronts Jamie with her knowledge of his failure to act when he learned who was responsible for the attacks on the Duttons—his biological father, Garrett (Will Patton). Beth gives the crumbling Jamie an ultimatum: Jamie must kill Garrett (Will Patton) if he wants to stay alive himself and remain attorney general. And kill him he does!

Meanwhile, Jimmy (Jefferson White) returns to the Yellowstone… with new fiancée Emily (Kathryn Kelly) in tow. Naturally, this does not go over well with his ex-girlfriend Mia (Eden Brolin) who is back in the bunkhouse for poker night. After a physical and verbal brawl between the women, Jimmy gets John’s blessing to return to the Four Sixes if that’s what he wants. After enjoying a tender moment with the Lloyd (Forrie J. Smith) and impressing the ranch hands with his new roping skills, Jimmy says goodbye to his former home and hello to his future in Texas with Emily (and his very own Yellowstone spinoff series). Mia can only sadly watch as they pull away. It’s a rather cruel ending for the barrel racer, but hopefully we haven’t seen the last of her.

Finally, peppered throughout the episode are vignettes of Kayce’s vision quest. These include hallucinations involving his dead brother Lee (Dave Annabelle), Avery (Tanaya Beatty), his old military unit, and an Indigenous woman (Robin Dear Towner). Kayce is shaken by his visions and returns home to Monica (Kelsey Asbille) a changed man.

Let’s break down the 5 most important moments from the Season 4 finale that will have repercussions in a potential Season 5 since it is more than likely that Paramount Network will choose to renew the show.

BETH GETS FIRED

Beth always knew that her stay at Market Equities would be short, but she thought it would be on her own terms. What we learn is that Caroline was well aware of Beth’s intrigue and intended all along to get rid of her. She tells Beth: “I gave you enough rope to hang yourself and oh boy did you fucking hang yourself.” She goes on: “You have violated everything. From the terms of your contract to your NDA; you have committed corporate espionage.” While Beth remains steely, there is a glint –just a glint—of fear in her eyes as Caroline lays into her.

Caroline then makes a chilling promise to Beth: “I’m going to put a public restroom where your fucking house is. I am going to chop down every tree and dam every creek. I am going to rape your fucking ranch to death. And you, you little bitch, are going to prison. Needless to say, you’re fired.” Beth takes note of Caroline Warner’s threats and goes on to deal with other problems, but we suspect that her war with Market Equities will continue.

SUMMER’S GOING TO PRISON

Man, oh man, Montanans really don’t like Summer Higgins and what she stands for. Judge Mitchell Davis coldly describes her to John as an environmental terrorist and notes her 42 arrests in a dozen states. Later in the courtroom, Davis addresses Summer directly: “I am not swayed by your education or your outreach to the community. In fact, the opposite. You know better. If you wish to change laws, run for office or vote for those who wish to change them as well. I look at your file and I see a career criminal.”

Despite the plea agreement, Davis imposes the harshest punishment for each of the charges against Summer, sentencing her to more than 37 years in prison. In his chambers afterwards, John demands that Davis “show some goddamn mercy” by suspending the felony assault charges and reducing the trespass charge to a year. Shockingly, Davis listens but laments that Summer will end up serving only 8 months with parole. We’ll have to wait and see how prison affects Summer going forward.

JIMMY IS OFF TO THE 6666

With John’s prized stallion Metallic Cat and his new fiancée in tow, Jimmy makes his triumphant return to the Yellowstone…only to be greeted with a punch by his former girlfriend, Mia. After Emily kicks the shit out of Mia, Jimmy and Mia have it out. Mia shames Jimmy by observing, “You didn’t fight. Not even a little.” And she is 100% right. Jimmy clearly needs a fresh start after these messy doings, so John gives him his blessing to leave the Yellowstone, happy with the cowboy he has become.

Afterwards, Jimmy and Lloyd have a heart to heart. When Lloyd muses that ranching is hard, Jimmy points out: “No, it’s hard to do here. This job’s hard enough without fighting the whole world for the right to do it. In Texas, I’m not fighting a neighbor to do my job because he’s got the same job. So does his neighbor. Just cattle and cowboys all the way to the horizon.” With that statement, Jimmy obviously has made his decision to see the last of the Yellowstone. Rest assured that Jimmy’s journey will continue in the upcoming spinoff series.

JAMIE CHOOSES OPTION #3

It wouldn’t be a season finale without Beth and Jamie fighting, would it? Knowing that Garrett was responsible for the attacks on the Duttons, Beth gives Jamie 2 options: option 1, she’ll tell John, he’ll call the Governor, Garrett and Jamie will be arrested, Garrett will promptly throw Jamie under the bus for an immunity deal, and Jamie will be charged with 3 counts of attempted murder and spend the rest of his life in prison; or, option 2, she’ll tell Rip what Garrett did and the truth about why she can’t have children, and then he’ll kill Jamie. Jamie begs for mercy and she gives him a third option: kill Garrett himself.

Jamie Dutton, Yellowstone

Jamie approaches Garrett as he sits peacefully on his son’s ranch. Garrett he tells Jamie, “Those Duttons are going to always use your fear against you. If I can ever teach you to be fearless, then you would truly have the world licked.” Feeling that his death is nigh, Garrett continues: “I’m 61 years old and these last few months made all the 61 years of fucking hell I endured worth it. Don’t you let those fucking Duttons deceive you into thinking you’re a bad man. You’re a good man, son, and I love you.” On that note, Jamie shoots him in the back of the head. It’s truly a shocking moment and puts Jamie firmly under Beth’s control going forward, especially after that blackmail photo she took of Jamie getting rid of Garrett’s body.

KACYE’S VISION QUEST

Secure in his prayer circle set up by Mo Brings Plenty, Kayce begin his vision quest. His first vision is of his dead brother, Lee, who chides Kayce: “You’re not doing what he asked. He said pray for a vision, but I don’t see you praying. What are you doing here? Do you need help? How can I help you?” When Kayce tells Lee he can’t let him into his prayer circle, Lee begins to bleed from the mouth, screaming, “Let me in, you fucking child! This is your vision. This is your destiny.” Mo warned Kayce of a coyote who might try to trick him, so Kayce is unnerved but holds firm, even after a specter of Avery tries to seduce him.

After dreams of his military unit in combat, Kayce next sees an Indigenous woman who describes two alternative paths for his future. He asks her to help him decide which route to follow, but she replies, “I can help you walk the path, but you must choose it.” Stunned, but resolute, he returns home to Monica, who asks him what he saw. Kayce cryptically says, “I saw the end of us.” Is he referring to their marriage or the Duttons or the Yellowstone itself? We need answers, Taylor Sheridan!
