Variety reports that Regina King and David E. Kelley are teaming up to adapt Tom Wolfe’s novel A Man in Full as a six-episode Netflix limited series. Kelley will write and serve as showrunner, and King — who has a first-look deal at Netflix under her production banner, Royal Ties Productions — will direct the first three episodes.

“The powerhouse combination of Regina King and David E. Kelley taking on the biting, still-timely commentary on Tom Wolfe is simply undeniable,” said Nne Ebong, VP Overall Deals at Netflix.

A Man in Full centers on Atlanta real estate tycoon Charlie Croker, whose business empire and personal legacy are threatened when he’s faced with sudden bankruptcy.

“All I can say is when David E. Kelley calls, you just say yes,” King said in a statement. “I know this partnership will produce something special.”

The Emmy and Academy Award-winning actress and director is no stranger to Netflix. She stars in the streamer’s new western film The Harder They Fall, and won one of her four Emmys for the Netflix limited series Seven Seconds. Her feature directorial debut, One Night in Miami, received three Oscar nominations at this year’s ceremony.

Kelley — who is also working on the upcoming Netflix series The Lincoln Lawyer and Anatomy of a Scandal — called A Man in Full “a passion project, no doubt.”

“The opportunity to tackle Tom Wolfe’s brilliant and prescient novel, to have Regina helming — I could not be more excited,” he added.
