Decider After Dark

Timothee Chalamet’s Sex Eyes Are The Spice of Life

Timothee Chalamet is one of the greatest actors of his generation, we know this. Is he the new Leo? Well, we’ll likely spend a large part of the upcoming awards season debating it and looking forward to watching them share the screen in Don’t Look Up. Buckle up, folks!

But we’ll also be looking forward to watching the 25-year-old in The French Dispatch and Dune, both out this month. And in order to celebrate him for the actor he is, bursting with an unfair yet intriguing amount of talent, we must first acknowledge his particularly impressive skill when it comes to making sex eyes.

Look, his dramatic skills are on another level. This guy gives performances I can (and often) only describe as “full body.” He slumps, he cries, he sighs. But he also stares, and in a way that feels like maybe he has an x-ray vision into our…souls?

What sells his performances when it comes to romance (especially when pursuing an older interest) is how he portrays his characters as innocent yet experienced, vulnerable yet dangerous, welcoming yet exciting. And he does it all with his eyes.

You know sex eyes. It’s a biological reaction to pursuing and knowing…it’s about to be on. Can you even name another actor that has this particular trait? Let alone one that can portray this in a non-cheesy way on screen? There are certainly no others in his age group. Or maybe, at all? Because what kind of actor will Chalamet and his sex eyes become? A Clooney or a Gosling are so traditionally handsome that they come with a certain confidence that doesn’t make their eyes sparkle with excitement when they’re about to get lucky. It’s the norm for them. Chalamet still brings a charming eagerness. He’s also not quite an Adam Driver type, which can serve a particular kind of taste. Chalamet can serve up irresistible to millions, like he’s a damn McDonald’s breakfast. He piques our interest (and our crush on him), and keeps us invested in the story we’re watching unfold, all while making us wonder: how is he so good at this?

Now, how much of those sex eyes we’ll get with his latest offerings remains to be seen. Perhaps the best part about them is how much they truly serve as the spice of life. You don’t always need them, and when you do get them, just a dash or a sprinkle as a bit of seasoning is all that’s necessary to make a big impact. He chooses interesting projects about more than romantic encounters, and because of that, proves he’s not strictly a sex symbol. He is, however, similar to a Billie Eilish, as it appears a particular age group really understands the appeal anyway. Yet there’s something about the way he promotes his films, reminding us that he’s young with awkward and nerdy tendencies, that only makes his sex eyes abilities that much more impressive.

Some actors are great at action scenes and you fully believe they can karate chop a limb off of another human. Others can make you pee your pants with laughter. Chalmet could also possess both of those charms, I wouldn’t doubt it. But not everyone can sell the lead-up, the anticipation, the suspense of an oncoming romantic scene the way Chalamet’s green eyes can (Yes, I did google what color they were to be sure and honestly, the answer came up quick enough to make me feel like less of a perv; so if you’ve read this far, you’re right there with me and check your judgment, pal).

If for some reason you still aren’t convinced, please direct your attention to the following pieces of evidence:

Timothee Chalamet in Lady Bird
Everett Collection

Exhibit A: Lady Bird. Even as a pretentious literature bro, he knows how to take his eyes off the page long enough to make an impact.

Timothee Chalamet in Hot Summer Nights
Everett Collection

Exhibit B: Hot Summer Nights. This Prime Video movie is up and down, but for a scene that had no right being as sexy as it proves to be, Chalamet once again proves that he has the upper hand, even when one is wrapped around his neck.

Timothee Chalamet in Call Me By Your Name

Exhibit C: Call Me By Your Name. Making sex eyes at a handsome man is one thing. At a fruit? No words.

If you look closely, you’ll also be able to spot those signature sex eyes in brief scenes in Little Women and even 2018’s Beautiful Boy, proving those peepers know no bounds. Obviously, there’s more to come. Not just of Chalamet’s sex eyes, but of profound performances that will likely touch our souls. Now, if he also peers right into them as well, that remains to be seen.
