‘The Sopranos’: Drea de Matteo Reveals Adriana’s Alternate, Never Before Seen Death Scene

The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark released on HBO Max today, but there’s still plenty of news coming out of David Chase’s original HBO series. In a recent interview with VultureThe Sopranos star Drea de Matteo broke down an alternate take on her character Adriana La Cerva’s tragic death in Season 5 of the hit show.

In the 12th episode of the fifth season, “Long Term Parking”, Adriana’s shocking death occurs at the hands of Silvio Dante (Steven Van Zandt). After she’s discovered as an FBI informant, her boyfriend Christopher Moltisanti (Michael Imperioli), is forced to cope when she’s killed by Tony’s right-hand-man. De Matteo won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series thanks to her performance in the episode.

But according to this recent interview, the death sequence could’ve gone down a completely different lane, if it weren’t for de Matteo’s recommendation. In the scene, Tony (James Gandolfini) calls her to tell her that Silvio is heading to pick her up and take her to the hospital to see Christopher. Instead, Adriana drives alone towards Baltimore, implying that she’s running away after being discovered as an FBI agent. But it’s actually a fake out, all in Adriana’s head. Silvio takes Adriana to be murdered in the woods after her dream sequence.

Apparently, there was an added scene that would’ve made this fake out a little more blatant, informing viewers of Adriana’s death before it occurred.

“There was a scene shot for that episode where Christopher is hysterically crying and tells Tony everything and Tony says, ‘I’ll handle it,’” de Matteo said. “I went to the writers and said that you can’t air it because then everyone will know that Adriana is walking into her own death.”

Thanks to de Matteo’s recommendation, her character’s death has gone down as one of the most iconic moments in Sopranos history.

“We needed her to go out with a bang, and we owe her that much,” de Matteo said. “Stevie [Van Zandt] backed me, but I’m not sure about Michael [Imperioli]. And they took out the scene because they realized it was a better way to keep people on the edge of their seats and used the scene as a flashback in the next season.”
