The Queen’s Gambit took home the Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series tonight, beating out Mare of Easttown, WandaVision, I May Destroy You, and The Underground Railroad. Earlier in the evening, The Queen’s Gambit took home the honor for Outstanding Directing.
“The one thing that no algorithm can predict, that no billion dollar budget can manufacture is word of mouth,” producer William Horberg said in his acceptance speech. “This award is for the fans who told their friends and who became fans, who told their friends: ‘Dude, you gotta watch the orphan girl chess drama.'”
He thanked show creator and director Scott Frank, as well as creator Allan Scott. He also had kind words for stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Marielle Heller, and more.
The Queen’s Gambit also took home the award for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, with director Scott Frank going under fire for a wildly long acceptance speech.
This year was an especially tight race in the Limited Series category, with folks like Anya Taylor-Joy and Michaela Coel duking it out for the awards. “In fact, it feels like this is the year when Limited Series officially are more important, more exhilarating, and more ground-breaking than traditional comedies and drama,” Decider’s Meghan O’Keefe wrote on the tight race.
