Netflix Ties All-Time Emmys Record With 44 Wins In One Year

In 2013, Netflix made Emmys history, winning the very first Primetime Emmy for House of Cards. Now eight years later the streaming giant came very close to doing it again. Tonight Netflix brought home 10 Primetime Emmys, bringing its total wins this year to 44 and tying it for the record of most Emmy wins for a platform or network in a single year.

Previously the record was held by CBS back in 1974 when the network brought home 44 total Emmys including 27 major Emmy wins. The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, The Carol Burnett Show, Mary Tyler Moore, and M*A*S*H carried the night with 13 wins altogether. It’s notable that CBS managed to score these numbers when only a handful of networks existed. Netflix has now earned as many Emmy wins as CBS did in 1974 but with a lot more competition.

Netflix walked into the night with its head held high. Last week the streaming service swept up at the Creative Arts Emmys, winning 34 trophies in all. A staggering nine of those awards went to The Queen’s Gambit, which stole the Creative Emmys as the show with the most wins of the night. It was also leading the pack when it came to Primetime Emmy nominations. This year Netflix beat out HBO, the longtime leader when it came to major Emmy nominations, with 29 nominations to HBO’s 28. Those honors spanned everything from The Queen’s Gambit and The Crown to Bridgerton and The Kominsky Method.

In years past it’s been Netflix’s vast library that has allowed the streaming giant to clean up at awards shows. That strategy certainly helped the night. Without Ewan McGregor’s win for Halston, Netflix would have fallen short. But really it was The Queen’s Gambit and The Crown that carried the Emmys this evening. The Queen’s Gambit walked away with two awards including Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Limited Series. Meanwhile, The Crown cleared the room with Outstanding Drama, Outstanding Lead Actress, Outstanding Lead Actor, Outstanding Supporting Actress, Outstanding Supporting Actor, Outstanding Directing, and Outstanding Writing, all for a Drama Series. It just proves you should always keep an eye on Netflix.
