Will Lin-Manuel Miranda EGOT for ‘Hamilton’ at the 2021 Emmys?

Lin-Manuel Miranda fans have been eating very well for the last half a decade plus, and it’s not over yet. Six years after Hamilton debuted on Broadway, Miranda’s wildly popular musical about the American founding fathers is now nominated for an Emmy Award.

How? Because the filmed version of Hamilton, which premiered on Disney+ in 2020, is nominated for several Emmys in the “Limited Series or Movie” category. (And, as Decider’s Josh Sorokach points out, Friends is almost nominated at the 2021 Emmys. It’s a very weird year at the Emmys.)

One of Hamilton‘s nominations includes a nod for Mr. Miranda himself, who, along with his castmate Leslie Odom Jr., is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie. Knowing that Miranda’s genius stretches across many mediums, some fans might be wondering: If the composer wins the Emmy for Hamilton at the 2021 Emmy Awards, does that mean Lin-Manuel Miranda is going to have an EGOT—aka, an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony? Well, not quite.

Will Lin-Manuel Miranda EGOT for Hamilton at the 2021 Emmy Awards?

Sadly, no. Even if Miranda wins for Hamilton at the Emmys tonight, the composer actually already has an Emmy award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for co-writing the song “Bigger!” with Tom Kitt for the 67th Tony Awards. Miranda also has three Grammy Awards (for In The Heights, Hamilton, and “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana), and three Tony Awards. The only award Miranda is missing is the Oscar.

Miranda came close to his EGOT dreams when “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana was nominated for an Academy Award in 2016, but it ultimately lost to “City of Stars” from La La Land. He’ll have another shot this year if In The Heights is nominated at the Oscars for Best Song, which it almost surely will be, as well as if the upcoming musical that Miranda is directing, tick, tick… BOOM! gets any Oscar love.

On top of that, Miranda also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Hamilton in 2016, meaning that if (when) Miranda does win an Oscar, he will actually have a PEGOT. Only two artists have achieved such an accomplishment: Richard Rodgers, and Marvin Hamlisch.

It won’t be tonight that Miranda makes history, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t root for him. After all, two Emmy Awards is nothing to sneeze at!
