Is ‘Clickbait’ Based on a True Story? Find Out With This One Simple Trick

Looking for a gripping thriller about the perils of internet crime? Netflix has just dropped Clickbait, a new series that will have you questioning everything you think you know about life online. But is Clickbait a complete work of fiction, or actually based on a true story? Let’s examine the truth behind Netflix’s buzzy new show.

In the series, an ordinary man named Nick Brewer (Adrian Grenier) mysteriously disappears, and a viral video is uploaded online showing a beaten up Nick holding a sign that says, “I abuse women. At five million views, I die.” His sister Pia (Zoe Kazan) and wife Sophie (Betty Gabriel) rush to find him afterward, but wind up questioning who Nick really is in the process.

If you’re wondering whether or not Clickbait was based on a true story, here’s everything you need to know.

Is Netflix’s Clickbait based on a true story?

Sort of! Although Clickbait isn’t based directly on one real-life story, co-creators Tony Ayres and Christian White drew on “two or three” real tales of explorations of catfishing and identity theft while crafting the series.

“One of [those stories] was obviously catfishing, and we were particularly baffled and intrigued by the instances of women impersonating men,” Ayres told Variety, adding, “People can fall down these quite  innocent rabbit holes, particularly with the internet, particularly now, and unleash surprising and sometimes tragic real world consequences.”

“In the age of the internet in particular, everyone has secret lives,” he continued. “Sometimes those secrets are untoward, sometimes they’re quite benign, but there are bits of ourselves we show and bits of ourselves that we don’t show… There’s a real blurring of those two things.”

Is Clickbait based on a book?

No, Clickbait was loosely inspired by a variety of real-life internet crime stories.
