Where is Nine Perfect Strangers set?

The series is based on Liane Moriarty’s novel of the same name, which is set in her native Australia. But the new series shifts locales: instead of Australia, a signpost in the show informs us that we’re entering Cabrillo, California. But was that actually where Nine Perfect Strangers was filmed? Nine Perfect Strangers was not actually filmed in California. Per Condé Nast Traveller, the miniseries was shot in New South Wales, Australia — just like the book! The saga was shot for five months in the paradise of Byron Bay, a real spa area that’s known for being a so-called “Goop-ville” in honor of Gwyneth Paltrow’s wellness company. Some scenes for flashbacks were filmed in Sydney, Ballina, and Killen Falls adding to the vast Australian (or, Californian) landscape.

A handful of the cast, like Kidman and Samara Weaving, are native Australians — so filming for five months amidst the pandemic was not a major challenge. Further, lead Bobby Cannavale is also married to the Australian actress Rose Byrne.

Is the Tranquillum House a real health and wellness resort?

Nope, the Tranquillum House is a work of pure fiction. There is, however, a spa that takes the place of the Tranquillum House: Soma, a spa in Ewingsdale, was used as the primary location for the miniseries. The location spans over a 22 acre forest, with amenities like a freshwater infinity pool, a yoga dome, and a shared living area.

Per the retreat’s website, “With the intention of creating a space to recharge your batteries, Soma has been mindfully designed with a modern yet warm aesthetic, allowing clarity externally for whatever space you need within.” Sounds like the Nine Perfect Strangers plot!
