Noah Hawley’s ‘Alien’ TV Series Won’t Premiere Until 2023, Earliest

Looking forward to seeing face huggers on TV? You’re going to have to wait a little longer. Speaking at today’s TCA 2021 day for FX, network chief John Landgraf explained that while they’re working hard on the series, the earliest it will arrive is 2023.

“It’s a beast, Alien,” said Landgraf when asked about the timeline by Decider. “It is a really big world‑building exercise.  Noah with his support from Scott Free is certainly up to it.  But, I mean, you’re talking about design and build and sets and world‑building; that’s huge.”

Landgraf continued that they were “moving apace,” and the “show may well roll out in 2023; probably will roll out in 2023.  But we want to get it right… We’ve got to get this one right, and we’re going to take whatever time it takes to do that.”

Hawley, who has previously worked with FX on Fargo, an adaptation of a movie franchise, and Legion, loosely based in a parallel universe to Fox’s X-Men movies, knows his way around big, previously established fictional universes. But as Landgraf explains, Alien is another thing entirely. Part of the reason for that, perhaps, is that unlike the wild swings Hawley has taken with previous FX projects, Alien will hew closer to the movies you know on screen.

“Very grounded,” Landgraf noted when asked to compare Alien to other Hawley shows. ” I think Noah’s very conscious of the fact that there’s a cinematic universe.”

Landgraf in particular called out the directors of the first two Alien movies, Ridley Scott and James Cameron, as specific influences on the TV series, though also added that there are flourishes that are “uniquely Noah.”

Though not a lot is known about the project, we do know that Hawley’s take on Alien won’t be set in space, or an alien planet, like previous movies. Instead, it will be set on Earth and work in the nefarious machinations of the Weyland-Yutani corporation, the people behind the initial missions that led to AlienAliens and beyond.

Expect more on Alien (or whatever it ends up being called) as we head closer to the potential 2023 premiere date.
