Camila Cabello’s ‘Cinderella’ Trailer Features a More Business Savvy Fairy Tale

Her glass slipper, her evil stepmother, and her fairy godmother are all along for the ride. But in the just-released trailer for a brand-new adaptation of the enduring fairy tale, it’s Cinderella’s knack for bespoke dress design and trailblazing small business ownership that informs her life choices and the discovery of her very own Prince Charming.

Starring singer Camila Cabello in the title role, and written and directed by Kay Cannon (the Pitch Perfect film series, 30 Rock), Cinderella also features Idina Menzel as the wicked stepmother, Billy Porter as the godmother (aka “Fab G”), English actor Nicholas Galitzine as the gallant Prince Robert, and Pierce Brosnan and Minnie Driver as his parents, King Rowan and Queen Beatrice. And don’t forget about Missy Elliot as the Town Crier!

This Cinderella is set to offer more than one modern spin on the material. In the trailer, townspeople in bright, fanciful knits perform group choreo to a version of Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation,” while the film’s soundtrack includes Manzel singing Madonna’s “Material Girl” and Porter, bedecked in glittery orange finery as Fab G, performing Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Shining Star.” There’s original music, too, and in case you’re thinking it won’t be breast-beatingly triumphant enough musically, Cabello actually beats her bodice while belting out her big central number in the trailer.

This Cinderella reboot is the first real foray into acting for Cabello, the Grammy-nominated, Cuban-born American singer who conveniently just released “Don’t Go Yet,” the first single from her upcoming third album Familia. But she seems to hold her own with the snappy, modern dialogue peppered throughout the trailer, and with the strong, musically-inclined cast filling out the supporting roles, the energy of this singing, dancing, smart-alecking contemporary spin on the traditional Cinderella feels akin to combining the broad, rom-commy vibes of 2004’s Ella Enchanted with the cleverness of Craig Gillespie’s recent Cruella.

Maybe it does! You can thrill to the trailer until Cinderella hits Prime Video on September 3.
