Every Neil Gaiman Show Coming to Streaming: From Netflix’s ‘The Sandman’ to ‘Anansi Boys’ on Prime Video

Neil Gaiman is a creator of worlds. Ever since he started writing fantasy and science fiction in the 1980s, he has bewitched readers with his seductive characters, macabre wit, and thrilling tales of derring do. Needless to say, Hollywood’s been interested in adapting Gaiman’s work for a long time. Films have been made adapting Stardust and Coraline, while television adaptations of Good Omens and American Gods have graced Prime Video and Starz. But now might be the busiest time to be a Neil Gaiman fan, ever. Gaiman is attached to a number of television projects in various stages of pre- and post-production, including the long-awaited live action adaptation of The Sandman.

But that’s not all. In just the last month, Gaiman has announced a surprise second season of Good Omens, a live action adaptation of his novel Anansi Boys, and hyped the second installment of Audible’s loving adaptation of Sandman. Plus he’s got connections to the Lucifer Season 6 finale (since that’s his character, technically), and a few projects in development, judging by his IMDBPro page. (CAN WE JUST REMIND PEOPLE ABOUT GORMENGHAST?!?)

So how many TV and TV-adjacent projects does Neil Gaiman have going right now? Which shows are definitely coming to a streaming site near you and which do we desperately need updates on? (*cough* Gormenghast *cough*) Will there be an American Gods Season 4? Who’s playing who in Netflix’s Sandman, and how long until Neil Gaiman conquers all of Hollywood?

Here’s everything we civilians know about Neil Gaiman shows currently making their way to our TVs…

'The Sandman'

Streaming Platform: Netflix
Status: In Production
Cast: Tom Sturridge as Dream, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, Charles Dance as Roderick Burgess, Asim Chaudhry as Abel, Sanjeev Bhaskar as Cain, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, Mason Alexander Park as Desire, Donna Preston as Despair, Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, Stephen Fry as Gilbert, Patton Oswalt as Matthew the Raven, Joely Richardson and Niamh Walsh as old and young Ethel Cripps, David Thewlis as John Dee, Kyo Ra as Rose Walker, Razane Jammal as Lyta Hall, and Sandra James Young as Unity Kincaid.
Why Neil Gaiman Fans Should Be Hyped: Because at long last, a live action adaptation of Gaiman’s most universally beloved work is coming to the screen. And because it’s stacked with brilliant actors and beloved genre performers. Furthermore, Netflix revealed a behind-the-scenes video for Geeked Week that shows the scope of the set design and the attention to detail being taken. It looks good!

'Good Omens' Season 2

Streaming Platform: Amazon Prime Video
Status: In Pre-Production
Cast: David Tennant as Crowley and Michael Sheen as Aziraphale
Why Neil Gaiman Fans Should Be Hyped: Although Good Omens was initially supposed to just cover the events of the book by Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, the series will now bring to life the novel that the duo plotted, but never finished. According to Gaiman: “It’s thirty-one years since Good Omens was published, which means it’s thirty-two years since Terry Pratchett and I lay in our respective beds in a Seattle hotel room at a World Fantasy Convention, and plotted the sequel. I got to use bits of the sequel in Good Omens — that’s where our angels came from. Terry’s not here any longer, but when he was, we had talked about what we wanted to do with ‘Good Omens,’ and where the story went next.” Gaiman also shared that the story starts with “an angel wandering through Soho, with no memory.” So basically the series will give us more of Pratchett and Gaiman’s imaginations.

'Anansi Boys'

Streaming Platform: Amazon Prime Video
Status: In Pre-Production (apparently in Scotland and soon)
Cast: Delroy Lindo will be playing Mr. Nancy and Gaiman has teased that one actress has been cast.
Why Neil Gaiman Fans Should Be Hyped: Anansi Boys, which is a spin-off of American Gods the novel, but will have nothing to do with American Gods the show, is one of the most popular of Gaiman’s books. It follows Charlie Nancy, a young London man who learns that his dead estranged father Mr. Nancy was actually Anansi, the African trickster god. Charlie is united with his long-lost brother, Spider, and the two embark on a wild journey. There have been radio productions of the novel, but never a film or TV adaptation. Gaiman says that’s because past production companies wanted to adapt the story with white actors. Now, it’s coming together with the help of long-time collaborator Lenny Henry and the team at Amazon.

'Lucifer' Season 6

Photo: Netflix

Streaming Platform: Netflix
Status: The Final Season, Season 6, will Premiere on Netflix on September 10, 2021
Cast: Tom Ellis as Lucifer, Lesley-Ann Brandt as Mazikeen/Lilith, Lauren German as Chloe Decker, D.B. Woodside as Amenadiel, Rachael Harris as Linda Martin, Kevin Alejandro as Dan Espinoza
Why Neil Gaiman Fans Should Be Hyped:
Well, um, I mean…uh…technically Lucifer is based on the character Neil Gaiman created for The Sandman. You know, the same character who will be played by Gwendoline Christie is the show? So, if you are a Neil Gaiman completist, you may want to watch. Or you may not! Or you may be confused as to why it’s on here. (Hey, he has a “Characters Created By” credit on the series and nailed his own review of the pilot way back when!)

'American Gods' Season 4

Streaming Platform: Starz; TBA?
Status: Technically dead, but Gaiman himself has said that Fremantle Media wants to bring Season 4 to life on a new network that’s not Starz.
Cast: Ricky Whittle as Shadow Moon, Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday, Emily Browning as Laura Moon.
Why Neil Gaiman Fans Should Be Hyped: Well, because Neil Gaiman says so! Even though Starz killed the beleaguered show after Season 3 (and the series struggled to hold on to stars and showrunner’s), Gaiman claims there’s still hope for Season 4…and beyond. In speaking with EW.com, Gaiman teased: “We definitely wrap the novel in season 4. But it is open-ended, in that with each of the showrunners, I’ve had to sit down and say, ‘okay, this is the plot of the next American Gods book, which I have not yet written, but you need to know this, because you need to know that these characters are important, and you need to know that this thing leads to that thing. So all three of them, bless their hearts, have done things to set that up, if we ever get there.” So, there’s that!

'The Sandman: Act II'

Photo: Audible

Streaming Platform: Audible
Status: The Sandman: Act II will premiere on September 22, 2021
Cast: James McAvoy as Morpheus, Emma Corrin as Thessaly, Brian Cox as Augustus, Kat Dennings as Death, John Lithgow as Emperor Joshua Norton, Joanna Lumley as Lady Johanna Constantine, Miriam Margolyes as Despair, Bebe Neuwirth as Bast, Bill Nighy as Odin, Regé-Jean Page as Orpheus, Kristen School as Delirium, Andy Serkis as Matthew the Raven, Michael Sheen as Lucifer, Kevin Smith as Merv Pumpkinhead, David Tennant as Loki, Niamh Walsh as Nuala, Jeffrey Wright as Destiny, Neil Gaiman as the Narrator.
Why Neil Gaiman Fans Should Be Hyped: The first Audible recording of The Sandman was hugely praised for the way it brought the magic of the graphic novel to life. Now The Sandman: Act II has brought together an all-star cast to adapt Season of Mists, A Game of You, along with the “Distant Mirrors” quartet and “Convergence” trio from Fables & Reflections. Oh, and apparently Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page will sing.

'Gormenghast'

gormenghast
Photo: Everett Collection

Streaming Platform: None, yet, but in development over at Fremantle
Status: According to IMDBPro, Gaiman and Akiva Goldsmith are still attached and a script is finished.
Cast: None; that pic of Jonathan Rhys-Meyers is from the BBC’s 2000 adaptation.
Why Neil Gaiman Fans Should Be Hyped: Well, Gormenghast isn’t Gaiman’s work — it is Meryn Peake’s — but it’s a creepy, dark fantasy story full of drama, revenge, and heartache. Gormenghast owns and a proper adaptation hasn’t ever been pulled off. Two years ago, it sounded like Gaiman and pals were trying to get one off the ground, but who knows what the status of Gormenghast is at this point? (I hope it still happens!)
