New Movies On Demand: ‘Zola,’ ‘Midnight In The Switchgrass,’ ‘How It Ends’+ More

So much can happen in a day or two. The world can end, or at least get thrown into complete chaos. This week’s featured new movies on VOD are all about what you can do in a day, from making amends and tying up the loose ends of your life, which is the basic premise of Zoe Lister-Jones’s new movie How It Ends, or starting out on a whirlwind journey that changes your life forever, as in the stripper-road trip romp Zola.

Since some things take more time to marinate, we’re also looking forward to seeing Bruce Willis’s latest, Midnight In The Switchgrass, just one of the seven films the action star will have appeared in by the end this year. (Much has been made of Willis’s prolific output these days, and it should be noted that while his name is on the marquis, he has plenty of time to appear in so many other films because he is only in this one for about seven minutes.) The film centers on Willis and Megan Fox as FBI agents who team with local cop Emile Hirsch to investigate a Florida serial killer who’s targeting women, until Fox’s character gets kidnapped and may or may not become a victim herself.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

Zola

The Twitter thread is now the movie! By now everyone knows that Zola is a story that started on Twitter. Aziah “Zola” King wrote a 148-tweet thread in 2015 that started with “So I met this white bitch at Hooters…” and from there, the tale she spun, about taking a “ho trip” to Florida to strip in order to make a few bucks with her new friend Jessica, Jessica’s boyfriend who is not at all on board with what the women are doing, and Jessica’s pimp, became a thing of legend, hashtagged #TheStory. The film version of #TheStory comes out on Friday and stars Taylour Paige as Zola and Riley Keough as Stefani-not-Jessica-probably-for-legal-reasons, and it was adapted from the tweets by Janicza Bravo, who also directed. As Paige summed up the actual Zola’s success, in an interview earlier this year, “She tweeted some shit that happened to her in her own way, and it became a movie. That’s genius.”

How It Ends

How It Ends is what happens when the end of the world is about to kill all the funny people. Written by Zoe Lister-Jones and Daryl Wein, the film follows Lister-Jones’ Liza as she tries to meet up with everyone who is important to her in the hours leading up to a meteor striking the earth and wiping out civilization. Liza is accompanied by a younger version of herself played by everyone’s favorite dead girl from Easttown, Cailee Spaeny. As Liza visits with ex-boyfriends, old friends, and her mother (played by Helen Hunt) and father (Bradley Whitford), she and her younger self ponder the meaning of life as they also make plans to eat, drink, and get high before the world goes boom. The subject matter feels grim, but thanks to hilarious supporting performances from co-stars Lamorne Morris and Olivia Wilde, the tone is ironic, fun, and free of despair.
