Stacey Abrams has published multiple hit novels, launched a historic voting movement in her home state of Georgia, and made history as the first Black American female gubernatorial nominee for a major party in the U.S. Now, after yesterday’s Emmy Awards nominations, she can add a new accomplishment to her already impressive list. Abrams received an Emmy nod in the Outstanding Character Voiceover Performance category for her role in the Black-ish election special, Variety reports.
Abrams made her Black-ish debut in the series’ animated special, which aired on ABC last fall. The two-part episode features Dre (Anthony Anderson) as he learns more about local politics, looking for advice from Abrams (in character as herself). The voting rights activist helps explain the benefits of mail-in and early voting to Dre — who is planning to run for Congress — during the episode.
After yesterday’s nominations, the official Black-ish Twitter account congratulated Abrams on her nomination. She replied, “Thank you for lifting up the rights of voters at such a critical time (and letting me appear such a fantastic show – awesome)!”
Abrams’s Emmy nom comes after her documentary All In: The Fight for Democracy was shortlisted for an Academy Award and earned a nomination in the Emmy category for Outstanding Writing For A Nonfiction Program. Abrams produced the film with Liz Garbus and Lisa Cortes.
Along with Abrams, the other Emmy nominees for Character Voice-Over Performance are Jessica Walter (Archer), Maya Rudolph (Big Mouth), Julie Andrews (Bridgerton), Tituss Burgess (Central Park), Stanley Tucci (Central Park), and Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy). The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards will be hosted by Cedric the Entertainer. After a crowd-less show last year, this year’s event will feature a limited in-person audience made up of nominees and their guests.
The 2021 Emmy Awards will take place Sunday, Sept. 19. Watch live starting at 8/7c on CBS.
