Kim Kardashian Says Her Sex Tape Helped Boost the Popularity of ‘KUWTK’

As Keeping Up With the Kardashians comes to an end after 20 seasons, Kim Kardashian is looking back on her career in the spotlight and her infamous sex tape that was first leaked in 2007, just months before her family’s reality show premiered. During last night’s reunion special Keeping Up With the Kardashians: The Final Curtain, the Kardashian family sat down with Andy Cohen, who asked Kardashian if she thought KUWTK would have been such a hit without the existence of her sex tape, Yahoo Entertainment reports.

“Looking back, probably not,” Kardashian said, admitting the tape helped boost the popularity of her family’s show. “I think that everything happens for a reason, and I really try to, like, live like that. And every time there’s, like, something and a crazy scandal that feels like you can’t breathe and how are you gonna get through this, it always is a lesson,” she continued. “Even if it’s a private lesson, or even if it’s just something that we didn’t know we had to go through.”

The sex tape, which was filmed in 2002 with Ray J and later released in 2007, was addressed in the very first episode of KUWTK, when Kardashian openly discussed the publicity from the tape, including a request from Tyra Banks to come on her talk show and discuss the topic.

Cohen also asked Kardashian if she’s thought about eventually explaining the sex tape to her children one day. The reality star and Skims entrepreneur shares four kids — North, 8, Chicago, 3, Saint, 5, and Psalm, 2 — with her estranged husband, Kanye West. Kardashian told Cohen she’s considered it, but won’t have to have the conversation any time in the near future. “Luckily, I think that so many years have gone on, and so many things have happened positively, that it really erases that,” she said.

Kardashian revealed that even years later, she still sees the tape as “something being held over my head.” She explained, “That is something that I have to live with for the rest of my life,” adding, “I try not to have any regrets, but it’s probably the one thing I wish didn’t exist and if I could erase any of the stupid things that I’ve done in life that’s probably it. It’s more so from being a mom than anything.”

While the Kardashians spilled plenty of juicy revelations last night, there’s still more to come. Part 2 of the Keeping Up With the Kardashians reunion special premieres this Sunday, June 20, at 8/7c on E!
