‘Perfect Strangers’: HBO Max to Reboot ABC Classic With Robin Thede and London Hughes

Perfect Strangers is coming to HBO Max. The streamer announced today that they would be reviving the classic ’80s and ’90s ABC sitcom, attaching A Black Lady Sketch Show‘s Robin Thede and Laughter Shock‘s London Hughes to lead the project. The series is currently in the  development stage, with both Thede is set to write the script and executive produce alongside Robert L. Boyett, who served in the same role back on the original show for its eight-season run.

The multi-camera comedy will follow perfect strangers Deja (Thede) and Poppy (Hughes) who discover, unexpectedly, that they’re half-sisters. They both inherit a one-bedroom apartment above a trap yoga studio in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, and though they seem to be polar opposites, the pair must learn how to live and work together as a family.

The Perfect Strangers reboot hails from Warner Bros. Television, where Thede and her For Better or Words production company is based with an overall deal. Thede currently serves as showrunner, executive producer, writer, and star of HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show, which was just renewed for a third season. In addition, Thede is also writing the feature Fasionably Black for HBO Max.

The original Perfect Strangers, created by Dale McRaven, was released in 1986 and ran on the network until 1993. It followed Midwesterner Larry (Mark Linn-Baker) and his distant cousin, Balki (Bronson Pinchot), who moves in with him after voyaging from a far-off, fictional Mediterranean island. The series ran for 150 episodes and anchored ABC’s original TGIF programming block.

Along with Perfect Strangers, Warner Bros. has revived a number of classic TV shows. The studio also has reboots of Gossip GirlHead of the Class, and Sex and the City in the works.

Stay tuned for a trailer, release date, and more info on the new Perfect Strangers.
