Anthony Mackie Says His “Make America Great Again” Idea Was “Shut Down” on ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’

While appearing at a Disney FYC event at the Rose Bowl, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Anthony Mackie shared his rejected idea for Sam Wilson’s (The Falcon) monologue in the Disney+ series. The pitch, which slammed Donald Trump’s “make America great again” mentality, would’ve been the kicker of the monologue in the show’s finale.

At the event, the team behind the MCU series spoke about adding more of Mackie’s personal qualities (like his reservations about taking up Captain America’s iconic shield and mantle), and how they made Sam’s evolution more naturalistic. They also discussed his final monologue, which sees Sam opening up about the struggles of being “a Black man carrying the Stars and Stripes.”

“Every time I pick this thing up,” Sam says in the finale, “I know there are millions of people out there who are going to hate me for it.”

Mackie discussed the importance of the monologue, referencing last year’s Black Lives Matter protests as a connection to the series.

“With all of the protests and everything that went on in 2020, there were just as many Brown people as Black people as white people as Asian people,” Mackie said. “Everyone, everyone in this country at this time wants to see a change, and that monologue sums that up a beautiful way.”

But Mackie also said that one of his suggestions was declined. His idea was to reference former President Donald Trump’s slogan, critiquing its message.

“One thing I wanted to put at the end of the monologue — and it got shot down — was if we’re going to ‘make America great again,’ it has to be done by Americans,” Mackie continued. “And no matter what your race, creed, color or sexuality is, you’re an American. And that’s what I think the new Captain America captures.”
