Eurovision 2021 Winners Maneskin To Undergo Drug Test Following Viral Party Footage

2021 Eurovision Song Contest winners Måneskin are under investigation after a clip of the band partying off-stage went viral during the grand final.

Footage captured by an event cameraman has been shared widely on social media as it shows the brutish Italian metal band in matching flashy red leather outfits drinking and celebrating at their table during the event while lead singer Damiano David briefly bends his head over the table.

Many have speculated that the singer may have been taking drugs, although David denied any speculation of the sort at a press conference following the group’s win late on Saturday.

“[Guitarist Thomas Raggi] broke a glass…I don’t use drugs. Please guys, do not say that. Don’t say that, really. No cocaine, please, do not say that,” the arabesque frontman begged reporters.

On Sunday, the European Broadcasting Union who organize Eurovision, released a statement in response to the incident. “We are aware of the speculation surrounding the video clip of the Italian winners of the Eurovision Song Contest in the Green Room last night,” said the EBU.

The union mentioned that the band has “strongly refuted” the allegations of drug use and that David has agreed to take a voluntary drug test once he arrives home. He requested a test immediately on Saturday night which “could not be immediately organized by the EBU,” according to the statement.

“The band, their management and head of delegation have informed us that no drugs were present in the Green Room and explained that a glass was broken at their table and it was being cleared by the singer. The EBU can confirm broken glass was found after an on site check. We are still looking at footage carefully and will update with further information in due course.”

The EBU has not yet defined a punishment if David were to test positive for drug use,

Italy’s Måneskin was the favorite to win this year’s 65th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest and secured the title with 524 points. Italy had only won twice before this, the most recent of which was in 1990. French chanteuse Barbara Pravi came in second with 499 points and Switzerland’s Gjon’s Tears won third place with 432 points.

“We just want to say to the whole of Europe, to the whole world, rock and roll never dies!” screamed frontman David on stage after their win was announced.

In addition to David, members of the glam-rock group from Rome include bassist Victoria De Angelis, guitarist Thomas Raggi and drummer Ethan Torchio.
