Looking for some hearty crime drama? Maybe a little period series? Look no further than Peaky Blinders, BBC’s epic show following a gangster family several months after the first World War. With the series finale airing just over a year ago in April 2022, you may be hunting for a new series to fill the void. We’re here to help, with recommendations galore.
Peaky Blinders is set in Birmingham, England in 1919, several months after the first World War, and follows the Peaky Blinders gang. Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) helms the gang ambitiously, a cunning war hero ready to tackle hedonistic London. He has bigger ambitions than the gang, though, and opportunity strikes around every corner. The series ran from 2013 to 2022, debuting on the BBC and streaming on Netflix, Prime Video, and more in the States.
Fortunately, there are a handful of similar series to keep your crime itch satisfied. Here are seven shows to watch if you love Peaky Blinders:
'Halt and Catch Fire'
Halt and Catch Fire takes place in the early 1980s, following the rise of personal computing. Three renegades tackle the rise, realizing that one computer can truly change the future. Former IBM exec Joe MacMillan (Lee Pace) enlists the help of Gordon Clark (Scoot McNairy) and Cameron Howe (Mackenzie Davis) to assist him in reverse-engineering IBM’s technology. 'Giri/Haji'
Giri/Haji, which translates to Duty/Shame in English, follows Tokyo detective Kenzo Mori, who also spends his time scouring the London Underground to locate his allegedly deceased brother. The thriller series tracks Kenzo’s every move, luring him into danger as he hunts for his brother. Eventually, he reaches the corrupt London criminal circuit, digging himself even deeper into the city’s perilous network of lawbreakers.
'The Queen's Gambit'
Peaky Blinders star Anya Taylor-Joy leads her own series with The Queen’s Gambit, Netflix’s hit drama. The show follows Beth Harmon, a pro chess player amidst the Cold War era. In a quest to become the greatest chess player in the world, Beth battles addiction, tough competitors, and a handful of other drama.
'Call the Midwife'
Call the Midwife is an adaptation of the famous novels written by Jennifer Worth, and it follows a handful of midwives in a community of nuns at Nonnatus House. The show is led by Jenny (Vanessa Redgrave), a new nun learning the ropes of being a midwife. Call the Midwife takes place between 1950 and 1960 in East London, with 12 seasons of BBC drama to binge.
'Designated Survivor'
Designated Survivor follows Tom Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland), a lower-level cabinet member of the U.S. government. When a major tragedy occurs at a State of the Union address, the president and most of the rest of the cabinet dies. Suddenly, Tom is launched into the Oval Office with little time to prepare, and must keep the country from reaching full chaos.
'Queen of the South'
Queen of the South takes place in Jalisco, Mexico, and follows a smitten Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga). She’s fallen in love with a prominent member of a wildly successful drug cartel, sending her deep into the ranks of the drug dealing ring. Caught between the hopelessness of her regular life and the dangerous (yet exciting) world of drug dealing, Teresa ends up starting her own drug empire in America.
'Godfather of Harlem'
Godfather of Harlem follows the infamous crime boss Bumpy Johnson on a quest to regain his place of power in 1960s Harlem after returning from a decade in prison. He must battle the Genovese mobsters in order to get his power back. They’ve turned his neighborhood into an unrecognizable location, nearly in shambles and destroyed after just 10 years.
