‘Bridgerton’ Spinoff: Netflix Orders Limited Series About Young Queen Charlotte

Here’s some fresh gossip for Lady Whistledown: Netflix has ordered a Bridgerton spinoff series about young Queen Charlotte, Deadline reports. The new series comes right on the heels of a two-season renewal for Bridgerton, with production on Season 2 already underway. The latest show to join the Bridgerton franchise will invite viewers into the origin story of the powerful queen, played by Golda Rosheuvel in the original series.

The Bridgerton spinoff, which will be written by Shonda Rhimes, will “center on the rise and love life of a young Queen Charlotte,” per Deadline. While the queen was not included in the Julia Quinn novels that inspired the series, she emerged as a popular character with fans of the show. The spinoff will also explore the early lives of Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell) and Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh). While the original show is a multi-season romance, the Queen Charlotte spinoff is set as a limited series.

“Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before Bridgerton brought her to the world, and I’m thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of Bridgerton,” Netflix head of global TV Bela Bajaria said in a statement. “Shonda and her team are thoughtfully building out the Bridgerton universe so they can keep delivering for the fans with the same quality and style they love. And by planning and prepping all the upcoming seasons now, we also hope to keep up a pace that will keep even the most insatiable viewers totally fulfilled.”

Along with the Queen Charlotte spinoff news, Deadline also reports that Jess Brownell — a Shondaland veteran who worked on shows like Scandal and the upcoming Inventing Anna, as well as the first season of Bridgerton — will serve as showrunner on Bridgerton Seasons 3 and 4. Chris Van Dusen, who worked on the first season, is currently working on Season 2.

“As we continue to expand the world of Bridgerton, we now have the opportunity to devote even more of the Shondaland fold to the Bridgerton-verse,” Rhimes said in a statement. “We’ve worked with Jess Brownell for over a decade and have long wanted to find the right project to place in her hands. When it came time to pass the baton, I knew this unique voice was vital to the future of the show.”

Bridgerton Season 2 is set to focus on the love life of Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey), and is inspired by author Julia Quinn’s second book in her “Bridgerton” series, “The Viscount Who Loved Me.” While breakout star Regé-Jean Page won’t be returning, Phoebe Dynevor is set to reprise her role as Daphne Bridgerton.
