American Version of ‘Eurovision’ Lands at NBC

The biggest international singing contest is coming to America. American Song Contest, a spin-off of Europe’s Eurovision Song Contest is heading to NBC. The project has attached the same team behind Eurovision to produce the upcoming reality competition series, including Propagate and Universal Television Alternative Studio.

American Song Contest is set to air midseason on NBC. The project has been in the works since last August, when the organizers of Eurovision revealed that they were brainstorming for an American version of the beloved television program.

The new US version will boast live musical performances, ranging from soloists, to DJs, to bands. Challengers can come from all 50 states, five US territories, and Washington, DC. Singers from around the nation will compete to win the country’s vote for Best Original Song.

American Song Contest will debut live, consisting of three rounds in which the competitors must perform. A series of Qualifying Rounds will take place first, followed by the Semi Finals, and concluding with the Grand Final, in which one state/territory will be declared the winner.

Eurovision will reach its 65-year anniversary this year, and is organized by the European Broadcasting Union. This year’s event will be held in the Netherlands, with the finale slated for May 22. Last year, the Eurovision Song Contest was canceled due to COVID-19. Notable Eurovision competitors include ABBA, Celine Dion, Olivia Newton-John, Enya, and Julio Iglesias.
